Hi
My partner is currently undergoing chemo and radiotherapy for tongue cancer spread to three lymph glands. He is finding it very hard to sleep as he is constantly coughing up thick phlegm.
The nurse and doctors think it is a side effect but nothing to be concerned about, however, it is really causing him a lot of difficulty in terms of sleeping.
Any tips or advice greatly welcomed.
Thank you
Ema
Hi Mousie.
get him to try any or all of the following which helped me.
Decamp to the spare room and sleep propped up with lots of pillows round him
Keep a humidifier by the bedside and a glass of water to sip in the night. I kept a kitchen roll handy that I used to spit in and disposed of in the morning.
Steaming over hot water helped me thin the mucous but others here swore by a nebuliser which you can buy fairly cheaply off Amazon. Some hospitals give them out but not many
There is a drug called Carbocysteine that some consultants give. It doesn’t work for everybody but it’s supposed to thin mucous to make it easier to expel. You could ask about that.
Drinking lots in the day is a good idea too. Up to 3 litres of warm water.
It is a normal reaction but I’m surprised his team haven’t suggested anything. It will go but takes a good few weeks after treatment finishes. I was pretty ok six weeks after but some people take longer.
I hope this helps
Best wishes
Dani

Hi Ema unfortunately par for the course for our treatment . I had humidifier in bedroom plus hospital gave me a nebuliser which I used 6 times a day. I did get carbusistine prescribed did it help not t really. Ur can try dipping soda water via a straw or flat Diet Coke if he can still swallow. I went into soare room for several months. Water is good either orally ir via peg or n g tube.
it does get better it goes as quickly as it came often replaced by dry mouth I’m sorry to say.
thr nebuliser and humidifier use saline or plain boiled water. Never use essential oils.
