Hi can anyone share their experiences of reducing the dosage on the Fentanyl patch from 100. The patches don't seem to be helping my pain and are giving me chronic constipation!
Thanks
Hi Harz. Are you out of hospital yet. Great if you are, but either way, this is something that you really should be talking to your medical team about. Hopefully they will be able to give you a different type of pain relief. I believe constipation is something that goes hand in hand with a lot of pain relief medications, but again, there are things that they can give you to help with this. Hope you get sorted
Hello Harz, they will normally slowly decrease the strength of the pain patches in case you suffer side affects, i take lactulose daily because of some of the meds I'm on as well as Ensure supplement drinks, i have never suffered chronic constipation but i believe there are faster-acting drugs available, mainly suppositories . Having constipation is very uncomfortable as many of us can vouch for so your team need to get on top of it as its bad enough suffering from your other aches and pains.
Chris .
Hi,
I was on fentanyl patches too and oxycodone. You have to reduce this kind of medication very slowly and definitely with guidances and monitoring from your medical team. It may be working better than you think. Definitely do salt water mouth rinses though as these are great for keeping the mouth clean and keeping thrush at bay.️
Hiya
I was on fentanyl and oramorph, its hard to say how much of the pain relief was due to the oramorph and how much due to the fentanyl.
It might be relieving pain without you realising, even though i was on a big fentanyl patch and a lot of morphine i still had a fair amount of pain in the first weeks after treatment finished.
When it was time to finish pain relief i did it gradually...
I halved my patch size and stayed on half strength for a week without many issues, but coming off morphine was more difficult.
Constipation was a constant problem, i took laxido every day to help.
