Hi Everyone, My name is Dawn, I used to come on here years ago. When my partner got diagnosed with stage 2 throat cancer, and eventually got radiotheraphy treatment for it. And with  all the ups and downs of the cancer diagnoses and treatment etc. You helps us loads. bless you. As you understood how we both felt etc.

The point is, iam back on now, is  he has been suffering, from a really dry throat the last 2 months more so around the front of his throat I gather. And a feelings of wanting to clear his throat at times. And also at when eating sometimes feelings, he might choke. He is scared to go to hospital in general due to his phobia, and with covid about, making him much worse on top. To not go.  As he is social phobic in general.

He is not in pain and can eat slowly with lots of gravy, on his food. He is worried sick his cancer has come back. Has any one got an idea what is going on?

Also his local GP has retired after 30 years, that he trusted and could talk to in November just gone. And to get him to go to  his local surgery now is even harder.

I would really appricate anyone's advice or help regards above. As iam worried myself to say the least with thanks. Dawn.

  • Hi Dawn.

I remember you and was just thinking of you and your husand the other day.

Do you still have the contact numbers for your husband's team?  You could try giving them a ring to chat through your concerns.  Also, isn't your husband still having regular check ups with the consultant?

  • Hi Linda,

No he recently got put on a one year review check up now,  Before that it was every 3 months he got reviews,  But changed to yearly review on last visit to ENT.

Ironically the Ent nurse called him for a check up back in November Last year. And he did mention to the lady. His problems. She said she would pass on the info, and get him a call back from the other specialists. But yet to this day no phone call.

Lovely to hear from you Linda hope all good your end. hugs Dawn.x

  • Hi Dawn, as Linda alludes to, he's not five years clear yet so you should certainly still be able to access his hospital team without going through your GP; even post five years it was always made clear to me I could call them at any time. Unfortunate you made contact but got no response, I'd try again.

Seems a bit of a jump to go from three monthly checks to annual as well, but maybe that's the virus effect.

  • Hi Dawn. To put your minds at rest. why not give the ENT nurse a ring and tell them how worried you both are? They might then call him in to have a check, they will have all the covid precautions in place. All the best to you both.

    Regards Ray.

  • I completely agree with Mike and Ray.  It does seem a big jump from 3 monthly checks to yearly.  I would definitely get back in touch with the ENT nurse and tell her your husband is still having the symptoms and that no-one has been in touch since the last call.

  • Hi.As Linda says, contact his team (he might have slipped through the net with all that the hospital teams have had to cope with). It could be anxiety at having been switched to a year. It's a funny situation when you A) don't want to be on their radar to B) hating you are not on their radar...it's the kind of reassurance thing. Also, I spoke on the phone with my consultant last month and mentioned I seemed croakier than usual but, it got better during the day. He mentioned that I will react to air conditioning, sunny weather, cold weather, heating and the only thing to perhaps flag up, is any change that doesn't go away at all.Hope all is well and he gets to chat to the team.

  • Hi Mike0, thank you for your reply, I agree best try and get a hold of someone from ENT, last times I tried it took a good few phone calls to get someone and also to even get a reply back within a week. Pre Covid.  life ah sure kick us all in the butt.

I do hope you are okay Mike. blessing to you Dawn

  • Hi old biker, thank you for your reply, I agree try again and see if I can get somewhere with ENT.  Hope your okay. old biker. with thanks Dawn

  • Hi Piya10,

Thank you for your reply. I do think he has slipped through the net, as they recently changed his review from 3 months to a year. And the nurse who he spoke to on the phone that  rang him up, back in November, must have realised that, that review was not allocated for him, after her phone call to my partner. And must have decided to leave it. Ironic but true I feel. And thank you for the info regards to the humidity and weather changes can affect you.

I do hope you are well. With thanks again. Dawn

  • Hi Aprilrain. I also remember you has I am just in front if your husband. As the others have said he’s not magic 5 years yet ,so there’s no reason why the ent team wouldn’t see him. Even after 5 years both my oncologist and ent consultants have said I will always be seen. So please please follow up the call it’s highly likely it’s nithung but we don’t know. At my September check up the scope showed a small benign cyst on my vocal cord fold..i was  checked again in December it’s still there   I didn’t have any symptoms and I still don’t with the cyst.i  have now moved to 6 checks and I will certainky be chasing if my appointments hasn’t come through. To be fair the consultant has said if I feel the need ti see her I only have to ring.
I am also involved with a study at Birmingham university looking at reducing the ent visits  to  self checking after year 1 but the caveat will always be if we need to be seen we will be seen within 2 weeks. Please renter cancer services have t stopped because of covid. Just ring them tomorrow and if yiu don’t get a answer get in touch with consultants secretary.
    hope this helps Hazel
