Hi everyone, recently diagnosed with Tongue Cancer T4N2M0

six weeks of Radiotherapy and chemo commence on 3/1/22.

PEG to be inserted this week.

Having had my full dental check before my treatment plan begins, the dentist has advised me not to use my anti-snoring device (Mandibular Advancement Device).

Not been a great sleeper anyway, however, the last few nights have been terrible, where I have tossed and turned. This is not from worrying or any anxieties.

Any recommendations for getting a better nights sleep, anyone using a memory foam neck pillow?

  • Hi derry4d

I use a memory foam pillow, it helps with general pain in my neck, this isn’t due to the cancer I had, but general pain.I’m also listening to meditation music to help me sleep, my consultant is reducing my meds and I now insomnia. Is the norm at the moment. The music helps me. You will get plenty of good advice on here.

I’m Hazel 3  yesrs post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes happily living my life I was 2TN2NM  h p v 16+ as for sleep sorry can’t help you.  Maybe ask your oncologist about your anti snoring device. My oncologist is  very patient led, so coujd be worth asking I’m lucky never had sleep issues before treatment snd after treatment I now regularly get 8-9! Hours. Not ideal could your g  p maybe  prescribe mild sleeping tablets ti get you through.
I had 7 weeks radiotherapy snd 2 big doses of a planned 3 chemotherapy can help with any questions regarding that.
Good that you’re having peg fitted it’s there if you need to use it.

  • Hi Derry and welcome to the community

Your dentist is spot on. You might as well get used to sleeping without your MAD as your mouth is going to get pretty sore from week three onwards

Mild sleeping pills might help but maybe try the OTC herbal ones first and go to bed after a warm bath with some lavender essential oil in it

Whatever you decide, stick with us and let us know how you get on

    Best wishes

  • Hi Derry4d

I only had surgery but I found a memory foam wedge (I got mine from John Lewis) helpful for me.  Fortunately I did not need any sleeping meds, but made sure I kept on top of my pain meds - even though I had to take them every 4 hours - in order to get some quality sleep.

  • Good evening derry4d, i used to sleep well but after my cancer operations, i needed something to help me sleep so i was prescribed a mild sleeping tablet, and still use them from time to time if I'm tossing and turning. Hope all goes well with the PEG fitting and you manage to find a solution to your sleep pattern, as Dani mentioned, lavender is very good for relaxing. Take care.

  • Hi derry4d

I used to be a terrible sleeper years ago but found that a going to bed ritual has really helped, part of which includes reading in bed until I'm so tired my eyes just won't stay open.  I was listening to an interesting discussion on the radio a couple of weeks ago.  The sleep doctor recommended taking a hot bath about an hour before bed.  Apparently the cooling of the body after the bath helps with sleep.  I must admit, I do always sleep better after a night time bath!

All the best for your treatment.

  • the pillow is great, the other thing i would recommend is better sleep natural drops
