Hi all.

Had a peg fitted yesterday,  and it's painful as to be expected with moving . OK when sat still. But I'm getting waves of what I can only describe as cramps from my left side moving under the peg fitted,  sometimes with a popping feeling. The peg is sticking into the skin but hopefully when swelling subside the fitting won't be as tight.

Has anyone else had this experience

Thanks Tracy

  • Hi Tracy, everything you have said seems perfectly normal, it will be sore and it will give that cramping feeling. However, it will settle down after a few days. It will feel a lot better when you have the stitches out. I had a RIG they are very similar to a PEG.

  • Yes ...PEG discomfort should settle down within a week, abdominal area muscles are normally very tender afterwards, co-codamol pain meds worked well for me. You will soon get used to the PEG  maintenance regime, advance and rotating seems a little strange at first, can be a bit nippy, it's essential to keep the area sterile, I was given a healthy supply of sterile gauze pads to insert between the PEG bumper and my skin.

  • Hi Michael

I did expect pain due to the procedure, tenderness etc. But it's these cramps and popping pain below the peg thats freaking me out

  • have a word with your team, they may loosen it a little.. mine was fitted very tight and was released just a touch.. wasn't a lot, but it made a difference.

  • A lot of people experience cramps. They are normal. Some folk sail through ok others not, it’s how your body reacts. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Buscopan seems to help.  You could run that past your team.
Many of these take a week to settle going by previous posts.

  • Thanks loz

they've just loosened it ,I can stand up a bit better now

  • Good evening Lotty, it will be a bit uncomfortable to begin with, sometimes it's just your body getting used to and recognising the foreign body. You can loosen the disc that fits against your stomach by sliding it down while holding the tube. My stomach is always moving /expanding, so the disc moves on its own, so i have to slide it back down, so it's about 5mm or 1/4 of an inch from your stomach. It should not be tight, as the stomach needs to expand and retract. I have learned this from having a PEG since 2010 so hopefully it will start to settle down now, all the best.
