Lump on side of tongue

Hey all

I have had treatment for tonsil cancer (with spread to lymph node) in the past.

About 2 months ago i noticed that if i yawn or put my tongue out i get discomfort on one side of my tongue. After looking for a while i spotted a small lump on one side and on the lower part of my tongue

I emailed my consultant about it, as i wasnt sure whether to ignore (and it had been there for 4 weeks) and he said best to have a look

When i went in he looked for 2 seconds and said its due to my tongue rubbing against my tooth and it will heal eventually, he said not to worry and im just more susceptible to this stuff due to treatment..

I was very reassured, he must look into thousands of mouths at the end of the day.

Roll on 4 weeks after seeng him and its still there, should i still be relaxed about this? is it being paranoid to book a dentist appointment about the tooth (which perhaps can be filed) and have him take a look? and finally has anyone else had issues with tongue sores that take forever to heal a long time after treatment?

I appreciate i probably come across as some sort of paranoid hypochondriac, and the truth is before cancer, i would ignore it- but now i find that hard to do.

Thanks

  • Sounds good to me Trev.

  • Thanks linda, i really hate bothering them as i know everything is crazy with covid etc.

  • I think you're being sensible Trev.  You've taken their advice and stopped chewing gum so I think you're right to mention it and get it checked.

  • My team are always drumming it into me, if I have any concerns I must tell them.

It’s a very reasonable communication and you are right to get something checked if you are worried.

I recently asked for an appointment to be brought forward because of a concern. It was checked and all is fine. I wasn’t made to feel like a nuisance.

  • I think I am due a check up in feb / march anyway, should I wait until then? I hate the idea of being a nuisance patient, but I am concerned about ‘painless lumps’

Hi Trev. I don’t think this is necessary. I have been seen twice out of sequence and I simply asked my CNS to ask my oncologist to see me earlier. No apologies.

  • Hi Raz

I get what you are saying, its just when i first mentioned the lump 5 months ago he saw me before i was due, and now i am banging on about the same lump five months later

I went straight onto 6 monthly checks after my scan showed a complete response, i was passed on to a different consultant after treatment finished (no idea if this is standard)

I imagine it is due to covid, in some ways i am lucky, i know some patients were not treated during the pandemic.

My dentist found it odd that i was on 6 months checks - when i mentioned the lump to my dentist he immediately asked how often i see consultant....

  • Hi Dani

I dont really have a 'team' anymore, i had my treatment under one consultant then was transferred to another consultant. I had 1 appointment with speech therapists during treatment but that was it really.

    Covid i guess.

  • I don't see the same consultant any more either Trev.  I saw the lead consultant who carried out the surgery and she followed up with me while I was in hospital and a couple of weeks later to tell me I would need radiotherapy.  Since then I've seen whoever is on duty at the clinic.  I do know they contact with the lead consultant if they think there is a need.

I had many appts with the speech therapists due to my swallow and voice but if everything's OK they don't routinely see people.

As you are now on 6 monthly checks I would definitely make contact if I was concerned about anything between appts.
