My husband had major jaw and neck surgery Tuesday this week, since when he has not been able to breathe through his nose. This is stopping him from sleeping. I am worried this will affect the healing process. Is this normal after GA? Anything I can do to help relieve it?
Hi Sue. I was the same after my jaw surgeries as there is a lot of swelling that takes time to heal. I used to sleep with my head raised on a foam wedge and tried using nasal sprays. It was most annoying and I did a lot of mouth breathing which caused my mouth to become even drier than normal. Unfortunately for me even several months/years after surgery it did not improve and became quite tiresome. Eventually I discussed with my surgeon at one of my reviews and asked what could be done. He looked up my nose with the camera and said that my 'turbinates' whatever they are (tubes between nose and sinuses?) were very small and he could do a day surgery to help. It was the best thing that I ever did and now although still slightly blocked my breathing has much improved and is no longer an issue.
Discuss with your husband's surgeon and give it some time as it may come good on it's own. If not there is always the option that I took. However now is not the time to think about that after such a big surgery. Get your husband to ask his medical team what can be done right now as he needs his sleep to help him with his recovery.
