Hey all
I have had treatment for tonsil cancer (with spread to lymph node) in the past.
About 2 months ago i noticed that if i yawn or put my tongue out i get discomfort on one side of my tongue. After looking for a while i spotted a small lump on one side and on the lower part of my tongue
I emailed my consultant about it, as i wasnt sure whether to ignore (and it had been there for 4 weeks) and he said best to have a look
When i went in he looked for 2 seconds and said its due to my tongue rubbing against my tooth and it will heal eventually, he said not to worry and im just more susceptible to this stuff due to treatment..
I was very reassured, he must look into thousands of mouths at the end of the day.
Roll on 4 weeks after seeng him and its still there, should i still be relaxed about this? is it being paranoid to book a dentist appointment about the tooth (which perhaps can be filed) and have him take a look? and finally has anyone else had issues with tongue sores that take forever to heal a long time after treatment?
I appreciate i probably come across as some sort of paranoid hypochondriac, and the truth is before cancer, i would ignore it- but now i find that hard to do.
Thanks
Good evening Trev, i had similar and they filed the tooth down a bit as it was a bit sharp and it was causing soreness of my gums and tongue, the trouble is the mouth, gums etc will change a bit after treatment or surgery causing discomfort, the filed down tooth or teeth helped me, its worth a try if it continues . All the best take care.

has anyone else had issues with tongue sores that take forever to heal a long time after treatment?

Hi Trev. Yes a 3 years I still get tongue issues tiny white ulcers if I overdo it on food issues eg we are over in Spain I tried pickled olives gherkins etc the other night. Next morning 2 ulcers on end of tongue. If I stretch tongue too much I get pain on cancer side. But you do the right thing get it checked. As time goes by we learn what’s our new normal.

Hi Trev, I've had had molar taken out as an infected root was interfering with my PET scans. The upshot of this is that I rub and sometimes bite my tongue on the sharp molar that remains behind the one taken out. With the tooth there it was never a problem as my tongue could not get into the space. Now I often bite it and draw blood and it always feels a little sore and swollen. Over time I will either get used to it and not get my tongue in there or I will get the dentist to smooth the remaining molar out so I don't cut it so frequently.
As to running the red flag up about potential cancer reoccurrence; don't be embarrassed to do that. Every change I discuss with my clinical team just in case - and as they told me last time I saw them, better a false alarm than ignoring a real problem until it is too late!
Didnt want to start a new topic on this, but - 3 months later i still get irritation and ulceration, its never gone in 5 months.
My dentist filed back my tooth but it doesnt seem to have helped
I saw my dental hygienist today who said my gums and teeth are spotless and healthy (great)
But she said there was ulceration on my tongue.
Again she was totally relaxed about it, thinks its my tooth rubbing my tongue... but it is hard to ignore irritation that lasts 5+ months?
I do chew a tonne of gum and wonder if this is making it worse? I literally get through a box a day of gum.
I guess i am being over anxious.. i am due to see my dentist again in april, would you guys raise the concerns or am i just being a hypochondriac?
Hi Trev. It’s possible you’ve answered your own question if you’re chewing lots of gum it can irritate .But as always contact your e n t consultant the gate the best ones to ask. Your dentist is good but if it was me I would contact e n t. Always better to check has you won’t be happy until you have done. So give them a call tomorrow. I still get ulcers from various foods and burning tongue but I know why so I can live with that. As fir a box of gum you’re it talking of the 60 piece tubs are you ? Do you chew the gum then park it up between gum and cheek to re chew later ? I probably b go through 6 pieces a day broken in half as well try that tip

Hi Raz
Yes i know its awful, i chew 60 gums a day, i might just stop gum altogether for a week and see if it goes. I started because it helps with saliva so much but could stop
I am conscious of the fact i contacted consultant about this same issue in august to be honest (and was told its just rubbing on my tooth) which is putting me off doing it again
My tonsil cancer was initially misdiagnosed as tonsillitis, which i think plays a part in me being less trusting
Will try no gum for a week, and if no better will contact consultants secretary
Thanks again
