My Partner was diagnosed in Nov 2020 with cancer of the voicebox with treatment being Chemo for 6 sessions over 6 weeks and 30 radio sessions over 6 weeks. He seemed to sail through the treatment putting a brave face on all the time until week 5. Week 6 chemo was withdrawn due to low platelets he stopped eating and lost tons of weight. He was 12/13 stone prior to diagnosis and is now around 8 stone. After 2 hospital admissions, one to put a feeding tube which was unsuccessful and the second was due to sepsis pneumonia. He started eating so was told to reduce his ensures but the following week he had lost weigh again this is almost 4 weeks ago since we had any contact with anyone who is suppose to be involved in the plan they have or even treatment. Lost all faith in the support we have had because it has been zilch.. he has now found another lump in the opposite side of his cancer site and the Gp ha sent him through the referral process again. He has now started to bruise easy but is this due to him losing so much weight. Worried sick as we have no where to turn and I think it will all be blamed on Covid. Can I also add that the last time he had a face to face appointment with anyone other than his GP and the paramedics and hospital staff it would have been his last treatment in Feb

  • Lets hope they pull their socks up and get things back on track for you both , it seems you have been unlucky with your aftercare, this sort of thing does happen and i fully understand your frustration. As Beesuit mention raising the subject with PALS will certainly help. All the best.

Thank you but do you not think this will make the situation worse and they will blame the pandemic, all I want is the support I have seen others have received in the past

  • Hi Amanda2021

I worked in and around the NHS for 20 years.  A formal complaint through PALS is the way to go.  The care received is well below standard and in all honesty Covid is not an excuse that is acceptable.

Unfortunately informal complaints are often ignored.  Formalising it through PALS means that the hospital is accountable and learns from their mistakes.  It will not be to the detriment of care for your partner and will probably help those following that pathway in future.

  • Hi Amanda

I agree with Peter.  A complaint via PALS works wonders.

My stepdad had a life threatening injury a couple.of months ago requiring brain surgery.  He was due a follow up scan 6 weeks later to check the surgery had been successful which wasnt forthcoming so I suggested he make a complaint through PALS.  It was sorted within days plus other appts arranged.  Brilliant response and highlighted he'd fallen through the cracks!

  • Hi Amanda. Please contact PALs I had to last year when my cancer appointments fell out of the system. I got reinstated within days. As Peter says if they don’t know there’s a problem by being told about it they can’t start to rectify. I’m sorry you’ve found yourself in this position cancer is hard enough without getting the attention you deserve.
    Hope you  get sorted.

Thank you everyone. Is it also normal to have bruising on your body without injury?

    Hi Amanda.

Did your husbands platelet count recover after he stopped the Cisplatin? That might explain it
