Hi all my husband has had a 7cm cancer taken from the base of his tongue he was in hosp for 2 weeks home for 2 weeks now and he's still coughing up.lots of muck is this how others were and if so how long did it last as he's struggling to sleep because of the coughing ..

If what he’s coughing up is coloured he might have an infection. I would get your GP to see him.

Hi Cissy, i used to cough up quite a bit of mucus and i think a lot of it is because the swallowing is not coping as well because due to the operation on the base of his tongue, although as Dani said it could be an infection if its a yucky colour. I found that salt water rinses helped to break it up, i remember when i was in hospital they used to use suction to remove it as i had a trachy fitted. The coughing up of the mucus will begin to ease soon but if it continues then please contact your husbands team , all the best to you both ,take care.
