Hello all!

I haven't been here for a while, as hubby has been happily and fairly healthily cancer-free for about 18 months now, and we try not to think about his illness and treatment very much - it was very traumatic for us all. His primary was never found, though a lot of his lymph nodes were involved and he had a radical neck dissection and chemo radiotherapy.

Due to Covid, hubby (43) had telephone consultations only over the last year, and was finally seen a few weeks ago. He has a white area on his tongue, which the docs weren't too worried about, and had a biopsy within days. His follow up appointment for results has been brought forward a week, and I am really scared. He has been pretty fatigued since the biopsy, which adds to the worry, though he never really got back to full fitness since his cancer (lockdown has done him no favours, and we have had four kids to homeschool as well as work!).

Has anyone else had white patches biopsied, and what was the outcome? I appreciate that our results could go either way.

Thank you for reading this!

  • Hi mum of muggles

Sorry you’ve found yourself back on here just wanted to say hi. Can’t help with the biopsy sorry but remember they are checking to rule out as much as rule in. Please pop back on when you’ve hit his results and  sending positive hugs your way. Bet you are glad the 4 children are back at school.

  • Hi, Mumofmuggles I had and still do have a white patch on the inside of my cheek on each side, they did a biopsy on one side, in January 2020,  which fortunately came back as nothing. Hopefully this is the case with your husband. All the best.

    Regards Ray.

Thankyou Hazel - yes, it's nice that the house is a bit quieter - child number 4 returns to school tomorrow! We got a puppy before Christmas though, so it's still a busy house!!

Thankyou so much for sharing your reassuring experience Ray. At least we will know a week earlier either way I guess!

  • Hi Nat. Sorry you’ve had to come back.
Was your husbands cancer HPV positive?
I had a biopsy of a PET/CT hotspot after treatment which was negative so that’s not quite the same.
I’m sure they are simply making sure. I wouldn’t read anything into the moved appointment. It might just be that the result is available to the MDT earlier.
Like Ray I have lesions in my mouth that were caused by the RT. Namely Lichenoid patches and telangectasia. None of it is malignant.
Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi, I had a white patch on my tongue January 2020. I had a biopsy which came back as dysplasia, mild to moderate. I wase given the option of watch & wait or excision. I opted for excision which I think was the right decision for me.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, i'm nearly at the 5 year mark from Base of Tonge cancer and a couple of months ago while at a routine dental appointment, it was noticed that i had a white patch on the inside of my cheek, my young dentist ask for a second opinion from another dentist at the practice, they both agreed due to my history to refer me to the hospital dentist. The hospital dentist was not sure, and once again based on my history decided to schedule me for a biopsy. After a few sleepless nights the results finally came as all clear and was blamed on my dentures/ teeth rubbing on my cheek, creating hard skin on my inner cheek.

Thanks for your reply Dani, he was HPV negative, which the oncologist was surprised about.

Thanks Rusty. Hubby thinks he sometimes bites this area (he certainly catches his cheek a lot!), so we are hopeful that it may be the same as in your case. Not too long to wait now, either way. It's his birthday on Monday, so we are going to make the most of this weekend, with another family lockdown party.
