Dear all,
My GP has been prescribing me Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Mouthwash, 300ml manufactured by Ecolab. I noticed that the ingredients contain Ethanol. Should I be concerned about this especially given the risks around alcohol and oral cancer?
Also should I be asking the GP to change it to non-alcoholic (no ethanol) instead.
Many thanks
  • Hi i would my mouth wouldn’t tolerate an alcohol mouthwash. See if you can get bioxtra mouthwash it’s nice soft and gentle plus ph neutral

  • Hi MrFox

I actually don't know but I was prescribed Endekay mouthwash by the hospital dentist so I'm thinking it must be OK.

  • Oh, and I find it quite strong so I add a little water to it.

  • Hi Mr Fox. Nice to see you back... if you know what I mean.   Is there any reason you need an antibacterial mouthwash? If there is  go for the alcohol free. It’s much safer cancer or no. You can get it OTC.
if you don’t need one you would be better with a fluoride mouthwash if you still have your own teeth.

  • Good evening MrFox, i have been using this mouthwash since 2008 , mine has to be antiseptic but i have watered it down a bit when my mouth was sore, i also find it very good for loosening up mucus first thing in the morning, once you have healed up then maybe change it for something like Biotene as Hazel suggested as they have some great products for our sensitive mouths. I understand your concerns reference the alcohol but the intake is very minimal, if i run out Savers or Wilkos do a similar product at a good price. Corydysl is the same product as you are using but because it's a brand name it's 3 x as much. Best wishes, take care.

  • HI Mr Fox,

Totoally agree with the other comments - why is your GP prescribing an anti-bacteria mouthwash? Over a long period of time it will stain your teeth, and good luck finding a Hygienist to remove stain at the present time!

Your Hospital team are better placed to advise you on your particular needs for a mouthwash- a fluoride-containing one is a good idea to protect your teeth if you had radiotherapy and have a dry mouth. If you need the Chlorhex one for a specific reason and have to continue I wouldn’t worry about the alcohol in it - tiny amount.

  • Personally I use alcohol free chlorhexidine - I don't know if the ethanol risk is significant but don't take the chance
