My husband is at the end of his treatments for his cancer, 2 more radiation treatments left, did anyone have swelling and gaging bad enough to throw up and he’s constantly clearing his throat.

  • Hello Chimamma, I'm afraid this is fairly common with the build-up of mucus also swelling can be apparent, I did not suffer myself but others on here have done, this is normally the worst time for the side effects to start so its nothing to worry about and it will improve in time.Im sure you will get some more replies tomorrow from people who have been through what your husband is having. Of course, if it gets worse then please contact his team. Well done to hubby for getting this far as its a big milestone, wishing you both all the best, take care.

  • Hi and welcome to the forum.
The first two weeks after treatment are pretty brutal. The RT keeps going but you are home alone without daily medical support and it can feel tremendously challenging.Taking frequent sips of water if he can is helpful and lots of people swear by a nebuliser to  loosen the heavy mucous. If he has painful ulceration there are mouthwashes like Difflam and Biotene which are analgesic and soothing. What is he taking at the moment?

  • Hi

Yes my hubby had all these side effects.

He still clears his throat a lot now and he’s 13 weeks post treatment.

Let us know how he gets on.

Hi Drivermason, thank you for your reply, how  long did your husband have a the mucus coming up from his throat, it seems to be really bad especially when he lays down....thank you!!

  • My sticky throat was largely gone by six weeks after the end of treatment but my throat stayed croaky and dry for weeks afterwards. First thing in the morning I had hardly any voice at all.
it caused me a lot of nausea and I could practically throw up to order. I got quite practised at swallowing it down.
    it does get better.

  • The thick, sticky, stringy stuff was the worst thing for Ken.
He had it really bad for maybe 3 weeks.

It started whilst he was receiving treatment but escalated quickly after treatment finished.

Night time was the worst and we got very little sleep.

We bought a V shaped pillow and he slept sitting up.

The weird thing is, it went as quickly as it arrived and he’s not been troubled with it since.

It will pass but it was awful.
