I had a small cold 4 weeks ago with a sore throat, I still have this sore throat with one of my tonsils heavily swollen and a weird sensation in my throat almost a mixture of an itchy sensation and something being stuck I've no difficulty eating or drinking however I'm very aware of the sensation when swallowing. My voice seems especially hoarse or strained in the mornings however this does improve as I talk more and as the day goes on I 've seen 3 different GPS so far and they keep telling me it's fine and drink lots of fluid and it should get better but it's not getting better and now I'm not sleeping as I'm petrified it's cancer I had a routine blood test done to check blood count etc and that all came back fine just very very scared at the moment really not sleeping at night with worry. don't really know why I wrote on here I deeply apologise if I've offended anyone just needed to vent and talk I suppose
Cheers for reading

    Hi Linda

sorry to bother you again I was just wondering if your hoarse voice at the time was constant or intermittent as mine seems worse in the mornings and non existent at times during the day?

It sounds like you definitely made the right decision for you and I hope your treatment went/is going smoothly

  • Hi Jellyman

No bother at all!  I'm happy to help in any way I can.

My hoarse voice was constant - there didn't seem to be a time in the day when it was any better or worse.  Unfortunately, I still have a hoarse voice.  It became progressively worse during radiotherapy to the point where I was barely audible.  It has improved slightly but I'm still seeing Speech and Language as speaking is quite an effort.

Other than that, the treatment appears to have been successful and now it's just ongoing recovery.

    Take care.

    Linda

    Hi Linda
Thank you so much for your reply I'm sorry your voice hasn't returned to before but am very pleased that your treatment has been successful.
The hoarseness in my voice has been barely noticeable today has crept in on a few occasions the thing that's concerning me more is the itchy feeling at the back of my throat that almost feels like something's stuck(which I know could be anything from reflux to infection just with how long I've had a sore throat for)I started the course of antibiotics today so I think my plan is now to see what my throat swab result says the finish the 10day course of antibiotics see how I'm feeling go back to my GP if she doesn't refer me to ENT o will be going private I've already looked into it it will cost £180 which is steep but worth it if it makes me feel better or what not.
Do you mind if I ask how old you were when you were diagnosed? Just because I've just turned 30 and I know throat cancers are uncommon in someone as young as myself but not unheard of thanks again Linda you've really helped put my mind at ease and helped me with my options of how to move forward it’s been massively appreciated

  • Hi Jellyman

That sounds like a good plan to me.

I was 57 when I was diagnosed.  An increasing number of people around this age bracket and younger are being diagnosed with cancer caused by the HPV virus.  Traditionally I think throat cancer was mainly found in men over 60 who smoked and the treatment was fairly life-changing.  Because of the increase in the number of younger people who don't smoke with HPV as the cancer driver, various trials have been set up to try to ascertain treatment that gives a better quality of life.

Glad to have been some help and I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed for you.

Good luck and look forward to hearing the outcome.

    Linda

    Hi Sheilagh
Sorry about late reply did t see your advice until this morning. I hope your husband is recovering well the consensus seems to be I need to go to ENT ASAP so as soon as this course of antibiotics is over I will be demanding a urgent referral or I will be going private can I ask if your husband had any other symptoms just because I'm not in a lot of pain at all at the moment I'm definitely aware of something but no pain,
Again thank you for taking time to reply and advice it's much appreciated

    No problem.

Yes, Pete is doing ok - he's in remission.  Had his 3 month ct scan and we see the Consultant next week to make sure that the scan shows it has all gone.

He was in an awful lot of pain, so different to you and whilst he could eat ok, he had difficulty in drinking.

Hopefully yours is nothing to worry about.

That’s brilliant regarding your husband I hope his scan comes back all clear!! I hope mine is nothing to worry about it’s just a case of trying not to think about it otherwise I start to panic and get really worried but as I say I’m going to finish this course of antibiotics and go from there thanks again

    Hi guys
I got my results back from my throat swab and that was normal so I went back to the GP today after another night of not sleeping due to worrying  and demand an urgent ENT referral so he after a bit of persuading the doctor did refer me so now just a waiting game hopefully it's sooner rather than later

  • Hi, Jellyman that's good news about the swab result. Well done for going back to your GP and pushing for a referral, that should come back soon and hopefully all will be fine. Good luck.

    Regards Ray.

  • Well done Jellyman.  As you say, hope you don't have to wait too long for the appt.  At least you'll know what you're dealing with once you've been.

Have a great weekend and look forward to hearing how you get on.

    Linda
