I had a small cold 4 weeks ago with a sore throat, I still have this sore throat with one of my tonsils heavily swollen and a weird sensation in my throat almost a mixture of an itchy sensation and something being stuck I've no difficulty eating or drinking however I'm very aware of the sensation when swallowing. My voice seems especially hoarse or strained in the mornings however this does improve as I talk more and as the day goes on I 've seen 3 different GPS so far and they keep telling me it's fine and drink lots of fluid and it should get better but it's not getting better and now I'm not sleeping as I'm petrified it's cancer I had a routine blood test done to check blood count etc and that all came back fine just very very scared at the moment really not sleeping at night with worry. don't really know why I wrote on here I deeply apologise if I've offended anyone just needed to vent and talk I suppose
Cheers for reading

  • Hi, Jellyman92 First of all there is no need to apologise as it is highly unlikely that anybody on here would be offended by your post.

You really must go back to your GP and tell them how worried you are about this and ask them to refer you to an ENT consultant so that  you can get the reassurance you need. In most cases these things turn out be  nothing, but for those of us where it has turned out to be something the sooner they know then sooner it can be treated.

Hope this helps you all the very best keep us up dated.

    Regards Ray.

    Hi Ray
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me I am going to try and see my GP tomorrow and request a referral thank you for your advice and I hope your treatment is going well

  • Hi Jellyman

Absolutely agree with the advice from Ray.  Do get another appt with your GP and request referral to an ENT specialist.  Chances are it's nothing but either way it's better to know what you're dealing with.  Unfortunately I kept getting fobbed off by my GPs so eventually had to pay for a private ENT specialist.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for your response Linda I’ll keep you updated

  • Hi there,

I totally agree with the suggestions from the others.  I saw four different GPs before one of them recognised what they were seeing, and I was in ENT seeing a consultant within three hours of that GP appointment.  Before that I had had three weeks of being sent home with platitudes and increasingly strong antibiotics, neither of which were any use.  Tonsil cancer is still quite rare, and so most GPs won't have come across it in their professional lives before.

There are a number of reasons why your tonsil might be swollen, and cancer is only one of them, but the people in the ENT department are the only ones who can make that kind of call.  Even then, they won't diagnose cancer until they have biopsy results, but they have the experience to be able to see when it is definitely not cancer too.  Getting a referral to them is either going to put your mind at rest or put you in the best place to move forward with treatment, so it will be the best move all round.

    Hi guys
Thanks so much for you lovely responses yesterday I saw another GP today who put me on some strong antibiotics for a week as she said she was sure it was an infection I asked about a referral to ENT we then agreed to see how these antibiotics work out and will go back to be referred in a week if no changes to swollen tonsil and other symptoms

I did feel listened too by this doctor this time
    Fingers crossed eh!
    Thanks again

  • Hi Jellyman

Hi there thought I'd pick your brains for more advice  hope that's ok?
So the swelling in my tonsil has improved still swollen but definitely less than before so says the wife anyway so that's good news I think now it's just the other symptoms that are really panicking me like the hoarse voice and a really scratchy sore throat that hurts to swallow which seems to be getting worse it just feels like something more than an infection because it's been a month of throat issues don't really know what to do next I'm probably not helping myself by googling everything
I have one more day if antibiotics to go
    Sorryto bother everyone again

  • Hi Jellyman, it's good news that your swollen tonsil has gone down a bit. However it doesn't seem to have given you much peace of mind, and if the other symptoms are getting worse then you have to go back to the GP and explain how worried you are about this and push for a referral to an ENT consultant. Once you have seen the consultant you will know for sure and if it is anything then the sooner treatment can start to get rid of it the better. All the very best keep us informed, it is no bother to anyone we are all pleased  to help if we can.

    Regards Ray.
