Hi newbie my best friend had been diagnosed but can have op as there is no spread going to have pet scan to make sure and has gym test booked for Friday he is coming to stay with me after surgery would really appreciate any advice you can give me to help him starting planning food ready many thx
Hi ..Your friend will have a dietician assigned to him as part of his medical team at the hospital ..All his dietary needs after surgery will be led by them tailored to his circumstances ..Some patients have feeding tubes fitted to help with nutritional assistance before and during recovery .some only need assistance for a short time and some don’t need them at all …Its all tailored to each individual circumstance ..It should all be explained step by step as your friend goes through his treatment plan ..My husband has finished all his treatment and had his surgery in December ..He’s had a JEJ feeding tube since July last year as being a slim man his weight loss has been a big issue since the beginning of his illness as he basically hadn’t the weight to lose in the first place ..Although he can eat little and often there has been no mention of the JEJ being removed for him yet and it has been extremely beneficial in getting those extra calories and nutrients into into him ..especially during treatment and subsequent recovery ....Everyone is different and although it’s good to be prepared we just took the whole process one stage at a time and followed all the advice given .
Good to hear about the support you’re giving your friend ..It’s a long process to go through ..a real rollercoaster of a ride too ..and everyone needs as much support as possible ..All the best to your friend and to you too with everything
Thank you for your reply I’m sure we will have lots more questions to ask all the very best to your hubby and yourself
Hi, I would suggest that you help your friend to get as fit as possible before surgery, it’s really good news that there’s no spread and he is eligible for surgery but it’s a huge operation so the fitter the better.
It’s quite difficult to plan ahead with meals post op because everyone recovers differently and food they enjoyed before might not appeal any more. Softer meals would definitely be best to start with, some people need to blend food for a time after surgery so bear this in mind.
My best wishes to you both. J x
