Hello,

My husband was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer last may, he has had CAPOX treatment which has proven quite successful, however there were mets to lymph nodes and rib so is now on a course of another treatment for those.

I am just wondering if the Macmillan support is for the older patients? We are late 40's with 2 teenage boys and haven't had any support whatsoever, we are navigating this extremely difficult situation on our own and even when my husband is receiving his chemotherapy, the macmillan volunteers will walk past us to another patient to ask if they would like a drink etc.

Suppose I just wanted to know we are expecting something we probably won't get so we can accept we are completely on our own in this.

Thank you.

Louise.

  • Hi Louise

I'm Wayne from the Macmillan Online Community Team. While I'm sorry that circumstances have brought you here, I hope you find our Community to be a safe and supportive place.

I’m so sorry to hear of your husband’s cancer diagnosis, and also want to say how sorry I am to hear your family has not received the support you needed when you have needed it most. Please know that support from Macmillan is for anyone with cancer and their loved ones.

To look into your concerns please could you share more details with us by completing this feedback form here or by emailing community@macmillan.org.uk and we can share this information with our feedback team.

If you would rather speak to someone directly, we have our Macmillan Support Line when you want to talk things through with someone for advice, emotional support or even just a listening ear. Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00. If you would rather speak to them via message, you can also do so via live webchat.

As well as our discussion forums, you can also contact a Macmillan Professional on our Ask an expert forum. Our experienced Cancer Information Nurse Specialists can answer questions about cancer treatments, side effects and more. Whilst you can also speak to our Information and Support Advisers who are here to answer any questions you might have. They can answer questions about the emotional, practical and financial impacts of cancer. The forum group is open from Monday to Friday. Once you have posted your question, a qualified Macmillan professional will respond within 1 to 3 working days.

You can find local cancer support services on our cancer care map. All you need to do is pop in your postcode and it comes up with a list of services in your area. Once the results have popped up you will see on the left-hand side that you can filter the results by category. E.g. Emotional support, groups and classes. You may see both Macmillan services and other local organisations that offer cancer support. If no results appear, try widening your search area.

I do hope you will find some support from using our Online Community forums, but if you need any more assistance, you’re welcome to send us an email at community@macmillan.org.uk.

    Best Wishes,

    Wayne

  • Hello Louise

Your post really made me feel sad, nobody receiving cancer treatment should feel they are completely alone.

When my husband was having chemo he was treated the same as others (he was in his 50s) even though some things that were offered weren’t suitable - sandwiches being the most obvious. It varies so much from hospital to hospital but it might be worth having a word with one of the nurses and mentioning how being excluded makes you feel, the volunteers might not even realise.

It’s a lot to cope with and I wish there was more support available for specific cancers locally, the OC group near us stopped and I know several people were upset and felt a bit abandoned. I can’t offer any practical support but I just wanted to reply and say I do understand how you feel.

Take care and I hope the new treatment is successful x
