Hello all I hope you are all doing well. My friend is doing well. One year post surgery t3 n1 m0 clear margins but 2/37 LN cancer and all scans to date have been clear.
This is really reassuring as he is still suffering with his mental health hugely on the fear of reoccurrence. I can’t seem to find any stats or evidence which can give factual information on this. Were any of you given this information by your mdt? in terms of stats or chance of reoccurrence (he said he was not told anything about this part and was too overwhelmed to ask).
I read on here that if your scans are clear at this stage you are still not deemed as cured until 5 years. I would just be really interested for any information on this.
I think maybe to have the information may be better than the complete unknown. I would also like to know how you cope with this worry as I know many do. He is a great person and is beyond grateful to be here I just wanted to go that extra mile to assist with this part. Thinking of anyone going through this and wishing you all the very best in the year ahead x
I am not a medical professional but tbh there is no definitive answer to your question. As our consultants have said, everyone’s cancer is different so no prediction is absolute. In general terms it is about risk. Eg my husband is T3 N3 so high risk of recurrence BUT I don’t know how aggressive his cancer is or whether any cancer cells escaped into his system before surgery etc. Our consultant said go and live your life …… you can’t spend it worrying about cancer returning ….. it’s a risk we all face. I know it’s easier said than done but looking at statistics, none of which have all the answers, won’t really help. The risk of recurrence reduces statistically year on year hence all stats are based on five year survival rates. Apologies if this sounds a bit preachy. I wish your friend all the very best and hope he can find some peace of mind …. I totally understand the worry.

Nobody medically trained or otherwise can provide you with the reassurance you seek.
Statistics can be quoted but there are always outliers. This is one of the most unpredictable of cancers.
it is assumed we all have micrometastatic cancer hence the need for surveillance which brings with it “scanxiety”.
My consultant has advised I set my horizons as everyone else does. It conflicts with everything I know about this cancer. But it does quell to some extent my anxiety in doing so and prompts me to set goals and enjoy life while I can. Similar to the advice you have already received, don’t let worrying about the unknown stop your friend enjoying the here and now.
I am almost two years post op and I am terrified all the time that I am going to have a recurrence
Every little pain I am thinking the worse. Don't honestly think I could go through it all again
It terrifies me to even think about it
My friend is exactly the same, is there any support available? My friend feels like the medical side has been dealt with but mentally he has been left to get on with it.
Sending you a hug!
Have you looked into counselling of any sort? I’m guessing it would be difficult to access on NHS simply because of waiting lists but perhaps through McMillan? It might be worth reaching out to see.
There is a charity here in the South West called Penny Brohn offering counselling and wellbeing. Maggies in some areas is spoken of highly. Perhaps someone could signpost if you post where you live

I did have a letter from my GP surgery asking if I wished to discuss my situation but didn’t feel I needed it, but your GP surgery may offer something similar!
I personally don’t worry about recurrence what will be will be and I’m not going to spend my time while I’m well worrying about something that may or may not happen ! Life’s too short x
but that’s just me ♀️
