Is anyone else on a feeding tube and how are you managing?
Hi leolady, I had my jpeg fitted when j had my laparoscopy, 10th october, did fight getting it for a bit, but god its been a life saver for weight gain and taking all my meds, couldn't swallow anything and I would have probably been taken in if I hadn't had it done, really easy to use, tuck out the way, friend had the nose feed peg, I have even had it running at night as well as day to bump up the calories, it's really easy to get used to honest. I have oesophagus cancer, which is being removed tomorrow. Have they said what tube choices you have. It will still be kept in after the op too.
Jules
Ps most people I met in the radiotherapy waiting room being zapped for my cancer or neck, head and throat, all said their peg was one of the best things they did. Especially when swallowing was hard or too painful.
I had a naso gastric feeding tube fitted on 23 December, it has taken a while to adjust to it. Unfortunately, the first feed they tried me on really upset my stomach. The new feed is slightly better but if I try and increase the flow rate to reduce the time on the pump my stomach doesn’t cope, so it takes 12 hours to pump 1litre of feed. Between that and the need to do an aspirant check every time I take any water or medicine, I can’t say it’s easy but it’s a necessity at the moment.
Have had a JeJ tube fitted end of October as not able to keep anything down and it has been great ! Use overnight for about 10 hours and take all my meds through it. Since I have had chemo I am now able to eat but still take protein through it and will need it after my operation. The only problem is that the area where the tube comes out is in a really awkward place and gets sore some times but it’s been a life saver.
Hi,
Just catching up with posts, I work with people with PEG tubes and speak with nutricia nurses alot. Not sure if you've already been told this, so apologies if you do know... Your tube should be rotated and pushed in and out slightly everyday to prevent the skin around it from joining. Just a gentle twist and slowly pull it in and out, if you feel a tug then stop as it's out further enough and you can push it back in. Clean the area daily once this has been done. The white clip should also be no more than a £1 width away from the PEG site (so pretty close) this will stop it moving throughout the day which should help with the soreness.
Hope this information can help Hun and hope your doing ok x
Thanks for that mines not a peg it’s a jej which I believe is different and is stitched with three stitches so can’t be moved it’s where the stitches are that gets sore as it’s just under a roll of fat on my waist line.
take care Tricia
