Hi all,

I had sugery in December and have been doing realy well, I'm now having some issues with reflux and heartburn at night having been ok for a while, so was wondering if its unusal .at this timeframe ? I would be most grateful for any tips or advice.

Many thanks,

Geo.

  • Hi

My husband experienced this after his surgery , he was prescribed Lansoprazole .He takes 30 mg in the morning and again at night .It seems to help alleviate the discomfort of the reflux and heartburn .

    best wishes

  • That's very similar to me. I had my surgery on September 24th and had no problems for the first few months to the point I even stopped taking the Lansaprazole prescribed. However I started getting some acid reflux issues at night two months ago which I'm controlling through taking 30mg in the morning and 30mg before I go to bed which is when it's at it's worst

  • Thanks J and Bob, I'm one Lansaprazole in the morning, tried to get GP to change to 2 a day,  just got a text saying  take 2 for 1 week only, after that I might try switching it to bedtime.

  • Hi

I had surgery to remove my Oesophagus and part of my stomach back in August 2024. I am doing really well and considering my advanced years -77 this year - I’m really pleased. My one problem is acid reflux which causes a very dry and annoying cough, and affects the muscles in my throat which causes difficulty drinking and eating. I have been prescribed lansoprazole and Gaviscon Advance. I have also been told to experiment when and how much of each to take. At the moment I’m taking Gaviscon after meals and lansoprazole night and morning. I am not woken up very much now, but it’s obviously still going on as my cough and swallowing are still problematic. I sleep half sitting up as well

Any positive comments would be much appreciated, and I hope my message will help someone as well.

  • Hi. I see you are alteady sleeping in a semi upright position which should help. You might benefit from a barium swallow which will determine if you have any form of restriction and therefore need stretching. I have had this done and it greatly reduced the coughing.  Glad to hear you are doing well otherwise. Incidentally I regard you as a mere youth!

  • Thank you for your reply.
I had a barium swallow X-ray back in April, basically to check there was nothing wrong with my swallow. It appears my throat problem is caused by having a feeding tube for three months, which agrivated my throat muscles. This is now made worse by the reflux apparently.

  • I’ve never put a post on this web site before but I would be interested in anyone’s comments.
thank you so much for your kind comment, I wish I felt like a youth!!

  • The annoying cough is my one problem from the operation. It started a few months after but won't go away. I've experimented and now take Lansoprazole morning and evening (but half strength 15 mg). I find Rennies help as well. The main thing for me is walking really helps to settle things so I get a few miles in each morning. Other thing that helps is beer - I never get reflux then.

  • Morning Dave

i am very active but not necessarily straight walking. Since my operation the only drink I can take - just sips- is pear and apple squash. Sadly sunny evening sitting with a G&T or wine are a distant memory - not sure I could handle beer, but thank you so much for your help. Glad I’m not the only one with a silly cough - something they don’t tell you about, and it’s very annoying.
    Best wishes
