Late Dumping caused by Sugar

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience or advice with regards to late dumping caused by sugar?

My dad is coming up for 3 months post op and is suffering from late dumping caused by sugar. We've been advised to eat nothing that is more than 5% sugar which when you start looking at ingredients it is incredibly difficult and pretty much writes off all chocolate, cake, jam, biscuits etc unless they are diabetic sugar free ones, which just aren't the same. We know it's sugar because when he does this the late dumping doesn't happen.

Has anyone else had this? Did it improve over time? Was there anything you did that was found to lesson the late dumping effects?

Thanks very much.

  • Hello,

I'm afraid no. I experienced late dumping only a couple of times.

My bane is early dumping and it's a very weird experience that leaves me very tired and sleepy. Very sweaty , buckets of if it, and that's not a figure of speech unfortunately.

I was not told about sugar content. I don't eat much of it, but I don't have problems with jam.

Have you talked to your dietician?

    Cheers

  • Hi SeaSurf,

Thanks for your reply, the dietician told us to eat no more than 5% sugar, and it works, just makes eating not that much fun when most of the tasty comfort food is now a no go zone. So I just wondered if anyone had any real life experience. I guess it would bring some comfort if we knew that others had suffered this and it's got better for them as it gives hope to us.

And yes dumping both early and late has a very wide range of unpleasant symptoms a seemingly unique combination for each individual. Such a tricky time to navigate.

    All the best!

  • Hi I am 6 1/2 years post op and suffered late and early dumping.

The early dumping symptoms faded about a year or so after the op, but the late dumping is still there from time to time.

There are ways you can make it easier and as for avoiding sugar thats not always the cause as fatty foods and simple carbohydrates can also be the cause, avoiding sugar certainly didn’t help me, eating small and often was the way I dealt with it

I hope like me the episodes get better soon.
  • Thank you for your response.

On the whole we find that cutting out sugar significantly reduces the late dumping from happening but the last week he's had two instances of late dumping which isn't sugar related so it's a bit of a mystery and very hard to work out.

I'm glad you don't suffer from it so bad now.
