Just finished five weeks radiotherapy and chemotherapy four chemotherapy infusions and chemotherapy tablets for the 12 weeks. For oesophageal cancer
How long after treatment do you start getting back to normal presently feeling tired, weak and still not eating solid foods just managing cereal and fortsip drinks. Where l was walking everyday I cannot do that at all basically get up in the morning and lying about on settee I manage to potter around the house but everything is a effort
Hi JaneyM1
I’m sorry but I can’t give you words of a quick fix, I basically had the same treatment as you except my Chemo was six weekly session plus a blood transfussion for low levels.
I coped well with the treatment and in fact fitted it around my work, until the last 2 RT sessions and then it all started to hit me for 2 weeks I didn’t move off the settee only for obvious things
I was able though to eat all the way through and after so that was a bonus, it does get better but try each day to do a bit more once you are a bit further into the recovery and speak with the Oncologist or nurses as some physiotherapy may help. I still get tired even after 2 years but some of that is possibly muscle waste from being non active and the treatment, I don’t know how you got on but I lost over 12 kg and then had to put weight back on. I have only in the last 6 months started taking the dog for a walk in the woods as I just couldn’t face it.
It will get better I’m sure so take care and just try a little push each day

Hi JaneyM1
Everyone reacts very differently to treatment, so there is no timeline for when or how things improve. Has the oncologist advised you of next steps?
Seems to me that they will need to look at how they can help you to mange your eating better, or at least at how to reduce the turmour further to enable that to happen.

Hi JaneyM1
I had the same treatment. I was shattered afterwards. They told me the radiotherapy carries on working for 6 weeks afterwards so my oesophagus would get more inflamed and it would be more difficult to swallow. I had a stomach feeding tube so was able to keep up my nutrition with that, and swallow whatever else I could manage. I was very tired. After a couple of weeks I could manage a 5 minute walk around the block, then worked up to 10 mins and so on. It took me 6 months to get back up to my normal long walk round the forest park and then I'd still have to rest when I got home.
Be kind to yourself, don't expect too much. You've been through a lot, the radiotherapy is still doing its job, so rest and let your body recover.
As for eating, they did say it would get worse then better, and it did. Luckily mine got worse only for about 2 weeks after the end of radiotherapy, then it started to ease again.
Take care,
Amanda
