My husband is due in for his op on the 10th January .we are  trying to sort out his clothes etc  for at least 2 weeks in hospital as I will not be able to visit him because of covid MaskUnamused  what we are wondering is will he need button up pj tops or a dressing gown on or  will he be able to put t shirts on ?

They will be opening him up down 1 side and across his stomach  .

Would like to ask what have you found most comfortable wearing after the operation?

Any suggestions or advice most welcome  xxxx

  • Hi. Think your hubbie will be out of it for the first few days and a loose open pj top, would be best when he gets the chance to change his top. Nothing closed as he will have difficulty getting it over his head, lots of lines and tubes, which quickly disappear during the first 5 days or so. Hope all goes to plan. I had my Ivor lewis Dec 2013, Xmas in HDU.  Still marching on. Although have a hospital appointment on 29th Dec as stopped taking fentanyl about 3 months ago and my throat is raw and  uncomfortable when swallowing. Hope it is a common experience as I have used fentanyl patches, post op up until 3 mths ago. Don't know if it's neuropathy due to nerve damage as also pain in back. Worried much.

  • I wore loose shorts and t shirts dressing gown slippers. Anything comfy really. Good luck. I made a full recovery had operation 29th March.

  • As I remember ( it was nearly 9 years ago for me) I wore a hospital gown for most, if not all of my stay. However I’d take in button up pjs and a dressing gown and slippers if I were him. If you think about it he will have tubes and wires everywhere including drips in his arms/wrists/neck not to mention chest drains, a wound drain, a feeding tube and catheter, so they need free access to everywhere. It’s only the last day or two that he will be able to get his arms in anything.
Don’t worry too much about not being able to visit. You will have screen visits I’m sure. He will find visitors wearing - he’ll have plenty of company from the nurses, physios etc and the occasional doctor. He will be well looked after and will spend a lot of time sleeping.

I hope he gets through his surgery and manages his recovery as well as I did. I’ve never been happier (despite COVID).

Counting the days, making every day count.

  • Hi Dave

Have you made a complete recovery in such a short time?

Hi, I was the same as Brent, hospital gown for days and elasticated socks. Certainly button up pyjamas and slippers and vaseline or lip balm. He won't be allowed to take anything by mouth, when I was thirsty I was given an ice cube on a sponge swab. The lips get cracked hence the lip balm or vaseline. Good luck to your husband for the surgery and recovery takes as long as it takes. Kind regards Frank.

Hi. Agree with most of the others. I was in a gown ( undone at back so the epidural was more comfortable) for a the first 5 days, wearing a second gown as my “ bat cape” when sitting out of bed or being walked up the ward. Very difficult to wear anything else with all the tubes etc.  might be worth noting that I was very bloated post surgery so do go for generously sized and soft clothes to change into.
    good luck to your husband

  • Yes started back at work full time in August. Joined gym after operation and did lots of physio type exercises and swimming and plenty of walking. Nothing over the top just built up gradually. Food sticks occasionally and I can feel where operation was carried out. It's just slightly tight but I can do everything fine.

  • Hi Mun247, my husband came out of hospital on Tuesday - just over 2 weeks after his operation. For most of the time he was wearing hospital gowns due to the drains and tubes etc. He only wore his pyjamas and dressing gown for the last few days. He was provided with slipper socks once he was able to walk around, but felt safer with his slippers. As has previously been mentioned, comfortable loose fitting pyjamas will be best. Hubby had both button up and pull on tops with him, but ended up wearing the pull on ones because they had long trousers.

Make sure your husband arrives at the hospital wearing something warm and comfortable that will be suitable for the journey home afterwards. Mine was disgusted because I insisted on joggers rather than his usual tailored style of trousers, but he was glad of the joggers in the end. Another point to note is that his clothes will spend the duration of his stay folded up in a bag.

I hope all goes well, Tiny xxx

  • Thank you all for replying, unfortunately  we got some bad news today from the results of his 2nd  pet scan.   they have cancelled his op because  the cancer has now spread to 2 places 1) a glad on Unamuseds kidney 2) a bone in his hip .  We are now waiting on them to decide his  treatment plan Unamused definitely not the result we were all expecting from the Pet scan

  • Sending some love your way.
