Hi, I’m new to all this, so sorry if this turns out to be a long post!
My husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last month, unfortunately it’s a stage 4, large and aggressive tumour and we have been told it’s “treatable not curable” he’s been told he has around 9-15 months. As I’m sure you can imagine, we are devastated. He had kidney cancer 4 years ago, which only required surgery, but have been told that that has also spread to his lungs.
he started on EOX chemo last week with the aim of prolonging life. So far he’s been lucky and apart from tiredness and pins and needles he’s not really suffered any side effects.
I don’t really know what I’m here asking for, other than perhaps some positive stories and a little hope that we can still have some kind of life before the inevitable happens. Doctors haven’t really been very helpful. We have been told we’ll qualify for very little help from the government as my wage is too good. We have 4 kids and the younger 2 (14 and 9) aren’t taking it too well, even though they don’t know the full picture yet (they think the treatment might make daddy better.) Just feel scared, lost and alone at the moment.
sorry for going on.

  • Hi, I’m very sorry you have had such awful news and not much support from doctors, it’s so frightening when you first hear the diagnosis and prognosis. When my husband was told he had about 6 months and ‘2 years would be very good’ I felt as though a brick wall was being built right in front of us and I admit I didn’t cope well for a few days.  That was in 2008 and he is still here, fully recovered and we are thankful every single day. If you have any questions please ask, if I can’t help I’m sure others will. Take care.

Thank you so much for your reply. That is absolutely amazing! It’s so nice to hear a positive story. I’m so happy for you and your husband, what a journey you must have had! We are still just in complete disbelief! My husband is so strong and actually looks so well, it’s hard to take in that he’s a poorly man.
What treatment did your husband have? Xx

  • He had 8 cycles of ECX, 6 initially and the oncologist was so pleased with progress he decided to go for 2 more. He said (then) that it was rare that the treatment was so well tolerated so the extra 2 were almost a bonus.  I think it’s lovely that you are looking for positivity, there are good outcomes and they need to be heard about, I wish we’d had something to keep us going but statistics weren’t so good even 12 years ago, things have changed a lot since then.
