Hi Scoopes, I had the oesophagus and the top third of the stomach removed, I think a few of us on here have. It seems that the junction of the stomach is fairly common for this type of cancer. There is possibly others who have had the whole stomach removed. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

Hi, i was diagnosed with stomach cancer at the junction of stomach / oesophagus. Had the operation last week to remove my stomach and part of the oesaphagus.

All went well and I was back home 1 week after the operation.

Op involved a vertical incision just below the breast bone, my team used a epidural anaesthetic as well as a general. The epidural controlled the pain for a couple of days after the op and did so very well,  they had me up and walking 24 hours after the op. It was a bit of hit coming off the epidural but plenty of good pain control was available but morphine led to some weird dreams!

    Good luck!

Thanks Rob and wishing you a speedy recovery Pray

strange question but I never got to ask my Surgeon, does that mean we won’t be able to eat again? He never mentioned that or if I would have a tube fitted?

    thank you x

Yes I can eat! Food now goes directly to my bowel which is now connected to the remainder of my oesophagus. The volume you can eat at any one time is reduced so you have to eat more often, learning what to eat as in is comfortable and doesn't upset your bowels is something I'm working on.

I do have a feeding tube fitted at the moment but as long as I can eat enough it won't be needed and will come out in a couple of weeks, note it was used whilst in hospital.

    Good luck!

  • Hi, how are you doing?
i was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer at the stomach junction, i had an Open Ivor Lewis operation almost 9 weeks ago. It was a bit of trial and error getting use to the new plumbing, but soon worked it out. Just the FLOT is tougher than the operation and new eating/sleeping habit.

if you need to know anymore please get in touch.
