Hello everyone,
We have just heard that my mother-in-law's oesophageal cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and so she isn't being offered surgery, just chemo and radiotherapy to try to shrink the tumour. We are feeling quite sad and shocked as the consultant has said they are not aiming to cure, but it is treatable. She is 75 and fit and healthy otherwise.
It would be so lovely to hear from anyone else in a similar boat. What have your experiences been like of chemo etc? Is this one of those things where people can have some good years ahead of them and a good quality of life, if they respond to treatment? Any coping tips, or practical things to help make her illness rest more lightly on her, would be great. We are very much at the information-gathering stage and keen to support as much as we can.
Very best to all, and thanks in advance!
Bea
I Bea, sorry to hear about your mother in law. What was the actual staging, I was diagnosed with T3 N2 M0 staging, the N2 means that the cancer was in local lymph nodes. I think some people have had good results without the surgery and have had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. So the first thing is don't give up hope, try to be positive and get her to be positive to. I only had surgery so I will let others give you advice on the other treatment. Good luck and kind regards Frank.
Thanks, Frank. It's hard to tell, because my parents-in-law are somewhat incurious, and I think they like to have just enough information but not too much.
So I don't know the TNM numbers, but I do know that it has spread to the lymph nodes in the chest. I'll try to winkle some more information out of them but I don't want to step on their coping mechanisms, if they are taking the attitude of not wanting to know every detail.
Definitely trying to be positive. She has a very healthy attitude that she is going to spoil herself and try to make the cancer fit into her life and not the other way around. So I think that can only serve her well in future!
Any other viewpoints would be most welcome, but to be honest it's nice just to chat to other people who are affected and hear their stories. Thanks.
