Hi everyone,
ive not posted for a while so I thought I’d give you all an update on my husband Rob. Rob had his Ivor Lewis surgery on April 24th at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Oh and pretty much in the peak of covid19. So the stress was just doubled.
I had to drop my husband off at the door and say goodbye, not knowing if I’d ever see him again. I don’t know how I drove home.
Anyway the operation went well and Rob is home firstly with the cancer removed and covid19 free. Not being there for him was just so difficult.
Rob came out with a feeding tube fitted which he still has and absolutely hates. He says he doesn’t need it because he only lost about 12lb. The wounds have healed so well.
My worry is his mental health. He is trying to run before he can walk. He asks if he is ever going to feel normal again. He feels tight and sore around the ribs. I have to keep reminding him that he had major surgery and not a tooth out!!! I was giving him three meals a day which was wrong. So I now give him five small meals a day. There are somethings that unfortunately go straight through him (sorry) cream is one of them and ensure drinks. Sometimes if he’s eaten too much he feels poorly and goes to bed. I’m assuming that’s the dumping???
We had a telephone consultation with the surgeon and the tumour has shrunk after chemotherapy and was only a t1. 26 nodes were removed and not one of them were cancerous! The surgeon said its really good news! So just 9 weeks of chemotherapy left to do which he starts on the 18th June. But reading a few posts it looks like he may not finish it all, but we will have to wait and see.
I just want to thank you all on here for listening to me and replying to me when I was just so desperate.
My friends husband has just been diagnosed with the same cancer. So i at least feel I can now give a little help and be a shoulder for her.
Take care everyone

Hi Judy, I'm glad to hear that Rob is doing well, and so are you by the sound of it. Tell him to behave, it's not even 2 months since the surgery. My surgeon told me that the trauma to the body from the surgery was like a severe road traffic accident, you can't see the internal damage. It does sound like early food dumping, sometimes caused by eating just a little too much or simple carbohydrates passed to the intestines too quickly. Made me feel weak, faint, bloated and ready to pass out, about an hour later when I started to feel better I would then get the sugar crash. Sweating profusely feeling weak and confused,so I learned to keep some chocolate close to hand. Anyway tell him he will learn his new normal over time, I was just grateful for the chance to keep living. Kind regards Frank.
Hi Frank, I’ve shown Rob your message and he is now realising that he needs to be more careful and walk before he can run.
I love this forum because I can show Rob that it’s not me nagging him and he can see for himself that he needs to take it easy.
Thank you so much for replying xxx
Hi all,
I had my opp some time ago, 10 years and I still get dumping syndrome, my solution is to drink a pint of orange juice and a few chocolate biscuits then after 30 mins I feel ok. if anybody would like any info on post opp symptoms, drop me an email.
tonyone.
Thank you for this. I will try anything to ease my husbands dumping syndrome. It’s awful for him.
Hi Judy, I will dig out a document my GP gave me and copy the information on it for you. I found it very helpful with information on the symptoms and some of the causes. Brent also had good tips on the dumping. Kind regards Frank
Hi Judy
I'm glad your husbands operation went well, my husband also Rob has his Ivor Lewis surgery next Friday and I'm so anxious about it all. He was told due to virus he probably won't have more chemo after but that was at the initial consultation end of March, so I wonder if they will decide to go ahead after all.
Thank you for posting an update so I have an idea of what to expect.
I wish your Rob a good recovery and look after yourself x

Hi
thank you got your message. I totally understand that you are anxious. I was in a terrible state. But try not to worry and make sure you keep yourself busy on the day.
Due to the Covid Rob had to have open surgery instead of keyhole. They said that keyhole was more of a risk. The operation also took much longer because it was open surgery and the extra precautions they took regarding cleaning equipment throughout the operation.
Rob is having 9 weeks of chemotherapy starting next week so they may change their mind with your husband. Different hospitals appear to do different things.
The hardest part was not being allowed in to see him. It was bloody torture. But we used FaceTime so at least I got to see him.
Please keep us informed about your husband’s operation. People give great advice on here. So ask for help if you need it
