Hi I am new to this and I don't have cancer but have just been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus and feel very anxious as I've been told that this is pre cancerous. My mum passed 2 years ago of lung cancer along with several aunties and uncles. I currently have 3 relatives that have cancer and are going through several different treatments. I have not really been told much from my GP or the specialist at all although I've had my 1st endoscopy and I'm on PPI medication I feel very unsure or aware of what is actually going on. Is anyone else going through something like this?
Hi and welcome to the group. My husband had oesophageal cancer and prior to that he had barrett's oesophagus for many years. It isn't necessarily pre-cancerous; many people have it without it getting any worse. There is another stage too before cancer known as dysplasia, then high grade dysplasia before cancer. The fact that you've already had an endoscopy means that they should know long before cancer appears and remove any questionable cells. I hope this helps to put your mind at rest.
Hugs,
LoobyLou
