Good morning. Was looking to see if anyone on here has had 2 stage oesophagectomy? I am almost 5 weeks post op and still constantly sick. I am on domperadon tablets and ondansetron also have jet feeding tube in situ but no matter what I eat or drink it makes me sick. Hoping someone on here has had this op and this is normal but will get better. It is making me so emotional feeling like this all the time. Thank you for reading and any advice would be great x
Hi Elaine , I’ve had oesophectomy And I am 6 months post op , had a feeding tube and sounds like the same symptoms as you where I vomited all the time didn’t mater what it was even water I couldn’t keep down , eventually I was re admitted and given cyclazene and metacloprimide anti sickness drugs and it dramatically helped with being sick , i still can’t eat properly I’m in the process of getting my oesophagus dilated , twice so far and am waiting on a third time so I can swallow solid food , all I can say is that you’ve made it through the worst bit and the recovery will take time and patience , and even now I still get down about it but there is light at the end of the tunnel .
kind regards
chris
Hi Chris thank you for your reply I can keep some things down for a while other times I have no sooner eaten or drunk anything and it is straight back up. Sometimes without much warning. I know it is early days as they say about 6 months recovery but everything is so exhausting and very emotional. I do hope for you it is 3rd time lucky and you are able to eat more solid food. Again thank you for your rrply

I am able to eat some things and ok for a while other times as soon as I eat or drink something it comes straight back up. I feel an emotional wreck aswell least little thing usets me. Hopefully you will be able to eat solid foods after the procedure again. Thank you again for your reply.

Hi Elaine , I know how emotional and exhausting it feels being sick all the time , I was constantly sick and couldn’t go anywhere without a sick bag , it makes you sore with all the wretching , you need to go speak to a dr or your Macmillan nurse , it’s important to try and stay hydrated but even if you have to go into hospital for a few days to get sickness under control it’s worth it , when I had the sickness I did t have any energy left, couldnt manage to walk few steps to bathroom but after they got it under control I got better much quicker .
regards Chris
I was in hospital couple weeks ago as was really sick I initially thought it was the feeding as it was constant through the night but not sure now. I am the same have a bucket beside me all the time and dont dare go out of the house as the sickness at times happens so fast.i am going to phone my doctor tomorrow as I am sore round my feeding tube and it looks like my tummy is indented there too. I haven't had a nurse or anyone come to see me since I was discharged so I am not sure what is normal etc after this op. Think they might need to review my anti sickness meds. Thank you again
I was tried on a few different anti sickness before I got a combination that worked and anything to do with feeding tube get it checked right away mine came loose and fell out and got infected, as for Distric nurses I had only ever one visit since I was discharged and the nutritionist comes round to check weight and see how you have been eating but I was in hospital getting an outpatient check every-week.
but best to get checked especially the feeding tube if it has come away or slack or anything that looks strange or uncomfortable I would just call Nhs 24 for advice
regards
Chris
Hi Elaine, sorry to hear about your eating problems. Did you mean to say you are on the jejunostomy feeding tube directly into the intestines? I found when they started me on that in hospital I had to reduce the amount getting pumped in. It takes longer for the food supplement to finish but it stopped me from feeling sick. When I got home I used to run the feeding pump over about 6 hours overnight. I was on it about 3 months and I was gaining weight so they stopped me for a month and I didn't lose weight. So that was me finished with the food supplement. That's just over 3 years ago and I have continued to gain weight. I was down to 57 kg when I got home from hospital, I am now 99 kg ! Diet in the new year for me. It's really a bit of trial and error with the eating but persevere and you will get there. Good luck and kind regards Frank.
Thank you Denis for your reply past couple days hasn't been so bad only been sick once or twice a day. Had nurse out every other day as round my feeding tube has been a bit gunky and weepy. 6 weeks post op on tuesday so might get tube out soon. Dreading that as dont know how they get it out and I am so scared of pain that I get myself all upset at the thought of anything hurting me now. Glad to hear you are doing well hopefully over next few weeks I will feel better too
My feeding tube got gunky and weepy too, so having removed the stitches from the plate the specialist nurse just had to pull it out. She couldn’t so called one of the surgeons who had operated on me. He had a job but eventually tugged it out. Surprisingly it wasn’t painful at all! Just an odd pulling sensation. He said that the other surgeon had done a good job of stitching it in. The stitches hadn’t had time to dissolve as it had only been in about three weeks. So I don’t think you have anything to worry about six weeks post op. It will be nothing compared to chest tube removal.
I hope it goes well.
Counting the days, making every day count.
