Hi, my mother has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. She needs to build up strength before they offer chemo as she hasOceanalso just recovered from pneumonia. She has difficulty swallowing anything but soup and today didn't manage that very well. Has anyone else been through this and found anything to help? Dieticians appt in two weeks but I want to help her in the meantime.  Thank you for any suggestions ...

Everyone is different but I was drinking green vegetable juice with a bit of juiced apple for flavour. I also had soup and guacamole just for a change. I hope you find something that she can manage to get down. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

Hi, I am in remission with oesophageal cancer.

If your mum is having that much difficulty swallowing, can I suggest she gets in touch with someone who is working with her eg UGI Nurse, Oncologist, Dietician. I had to be admitted in hospital as I couldn't manage anything apart from soup, yogurts. I was dehydrated by this time. I had only 1 chemo session out of 4 so everyone was eager for me to start again with the chemo. Anyway, I had an endoscopy just to double check things and they fitted a nasogastric tube. I could then be given nutritious feed through that. I personally really disliked it - but it did what was needed and I was  fit enough to carry on my chemo. I had the chemo sessions followed by surgery and chemoradiotherapy.

Your Mum's appetite will also be very low after the pneumonia. I really think she needs to be seen earlier than her next 2 week appointment. Weight can drop off so easily if she is not getting enough calories.

I hope things work out well for you and your Mum!
