Wedge pillow ?

Hello,

I had the 4 pre op FLOT , Ivor Lewis op , then 4 more treatments of FLOT two years ago and I m doing very well. I see my fantastic Surgeon every 4 months for a chat.

for info - On the post op FLOT I was losing feelings in my fingers & toes so my fab Oncologist reduced one part of the FLOT by 25% - so have the discussions.

I came off omzaprazole a few months ago as it wasn’t helping and my Surgeon suggested trying Famotidine tablets which I take if I have eaten anything a little too spicy and they do well. I do have bad diarrhea and through trial and error I’m learning which highly processed foods to stay away from .

I have a wedge foam pillow and a couple of ordinary pillows on top - but I slide off it most nights and inhale ( aspirate ) acid and badly cough for an hour or so.to the point of vomiting ( one benefit of not having a upper stomach valve is retching is easy ).

So any sleeping tips or tricks , what wedge works in your experience etc .

And any research / books on post Ivor Lewis eating to prevent or reduce  diarrhea ?

Thanks and hang in there folks Heart️, the NHS is superb and we are all here today in one shape or another Thumbsup tone2

  • I bought a wedge pillow which overall has been a waste of money.  It is a double and basically just a piece of foam which is very unwieldy and difficult to put the case on. I put other pillows on top too. However it slides off the side of the bed (I sleep alone) and the pillows slide off it. Moved it into the spare room awaiting a trip to the tip. I have 6 firm pillows on the bed which I try a build into shape to support side sleeping at an angle with limited success.

  • Hi, I feel for you, I was the same but I did try a pillow in between my knees and bum so it stopped me sliding down the bed, however in the end whilst that worked I couldn't get comfy and I finished up buying an electric bed that I could raise the back but still keep the pillow where it's needed

It's a difficult one unfortunately Shimmie

However bet your relieved your okay otherwise, Take Care

  • Even though I take Lansoprazole in the evening I also take gaviscon before bed ! Don’t know it this might help Shrug‍♀️

  • Sorry if this is obvious but eat at least three hours before you go to bed …

Keep evening meals very light no red meat , fatty foods etc

  • I had ny operation on the 23rd Feb and don't feel like i've had a decent night's sleep since I was in hospital, drugged up to the nines so in a very similar situation myself.

Currently using a bed wedge with about a 15-20cm lift along with three pillows.

Massively uncomfortable and I often end up sliding down the bed and waking up with really bad acid. Any less than the wedge and a ridiculous amount of pillows I get pretty bad reflux and cant get off to sleep.

Been looking at the medcline pillow system which is specifically aimed at people suffering from reflux but at £240 quid (currently discounted from £299), it's a lot of money for something that might not improve things for me and for what is essentially just a bed wedge and pillow.

Also considered an electric but again, seriously expensive but could be money well spent.

Sorry I can't be of any help to your problem other than to give you the comfort that you are not alone.

I am hoping it gets better with time as currently feel like I have two options. Bad nights sleep with limited reflux but a sore neck from using too many pillows or bad nights sleep with a comfortable amount of pillows but bad acid due to not being sufficiently upright.

Tried a couple of beers Saturday night with the football and had a disastrous night's sleep so won't be repeating that any time soon. Lol

Hoping someone on here can provide ths solution to our sleep conundrum.

  • Sorry I can’t help but I feel your pain!! I have an electric bed and after having a JeJ tube for several months prior to my surgery I became used to sleeping sitting up, I do tend to slip down occasionally and sometimes forget a turn on my side and that’s when I get reflux.
But my main problem is wind I get a pain in my chest and I have to either sit on the side of the bed or stand up and and after several large burps it goes,

Good to hear you’re doing well though after the operation other than the sleep situation take care Tricia
