Reoccurrence symptoms

Hi just looking for some reassurance really

My mum was diagnosed May ‘24. Finished the chemo and had her Ivor Lewis procedure end of November. Did not have the follow up chemo because she was deemed not well enough

She was fine all last year, slow progress, eating is still tricky but managed to gain a lot of her weight back etc. January she had a chest infection which got better then she was ill again pretty much all of March, not sure if it was the coughing or the muscles etc that was causing it but she’s back to retching and vomiting after some meals. I’m just concerned that if there was a reoccurrence how would the symptoms show up?
She hasn’t had a proper follow up for ages, do you think it’s worth her calling her cancer nurse for a chat and see if they can arrange another scan or something to put her mind at rest?

Just wondering what other people’s experiences were in the case of reoccurrence/symptoms etc

  • After the Ivor Lewis there is (almost) no oesophagus to have a reoccurrence. There is a huge variation as to how each body copes with having half the stomach removed and reshaping it into a substitute for an Oesophagus+stomach. Some people will bring up black liquid most mornings, others get bad reflex. Others like me get a bit of discomfort with coughing after meals but easy to manage it - I have to walk every morning and will not eat anything till lunch,

It does sound like a good idea to call her cancer nurse but really just for advice on looking for ways to identtify causes and reduce the problems after meals.

  • Thanks for your reply Dave, the symptoms had really settled down before she was ill, it’s the new onset of vomiting etc I was concerned about

  • I personally haven’t had experience of this but I understand that some people need to have a stretch as the oesphagus can narrow causing problems after surgery ! I would definitely call her GI nurse as it’s definitely not right Tricia x

  • Not true unfortunately Dave. Did my 8x FLOT and successful IL surgery. Post op CT scan 9 months afterwards found a lesion at the site of the join.

  • Sorry to disagree Dave but that isn’t really accurate. Reoccurrence can occur anywhere especially at the site of the join. Risk level depends on how clear the margins are after surgery. As an example my husband has an R1 resection which means clearance was less than 1 mm. R0 means clear margins more than that.
    wishing you well.

  • Sorry to hear your Mum is not feeling great. Anything unusual is a reason to contact the surgical/oncology team straight away so that they can rule things out. The upper GI specialist cancer nurses are my best point of contact so a good starting point. Hope your mum can be seen soon.
