Hello, my husband 4 Weeks post surgery and it has been and still is a very difficult time. He is now able to sleep in bed which is good, his wounds have healed great although the stomach one leaked for 2 weeks. His mood is terribly low at the moment as he coughs or tries to cough up stuff then starts to retch which then makes his chest hurt. He has not eaten much at all really since surgery and now even after drinking a prescription drink feels sick straightaway, every time he has anything he feels like this sick and can feel it inside. Still taking pain meds gets constipation which even after taking things to help takes a long time to work so has stomach pain which was bad last night, just got back in bed as now had the drink feels instantly sick.
I really don’t know how to deal with this and not being able to help him with this is honestly horrible. Will bring this up with consultant who he sees in 2 weeks who did the surgery. He has been advised that he needs the post FLOT chemo when he is stronger but he’s really not keen on that at all. Just feeling like nothing is getting better x
Hi Brush. I know that it is very difficult for partners to deal with these issues and also very worrying. It is essential that your husband takes in nutrition and if he is not doing this then he will need help now rather than waiting to see a consultant in 2 weeks time. I suggest you speak to his GI contact nurse and discuss your concerns. They are there to provide this kind of support and in my experience at my hospital they are very good at it. I do hope things improve for you both.
Hi Brush. Sorry you are both having a tough time. As Anglars has said, get on to your team ASAP to get some support. Just a thought…. my husband and many others couldn’t tolerate the prescription shakes etc as they had too much sugar and either made him feel sick or sent him straight to the loo. We started using HUEL which can be bought in supermarkets. Chris sipped it over the course of a day as it’s not a small bottle so that gave him 400 calories at least and he could tolerate it. Sending good wishes for improvement.

Week three and week four were the worst for me regarding mood ! The first couple of week you have heavy pain relief and feel ok ! But when you get home you can become very short tempered and loved ones can do no right, its hard to explain I came off my pain relief a bit too quick which didn’t help as I then struggled, the pain killers may be causing the constipation as this was something I suffered and still do suffer with occasionally!
Fortunately I did not have any trouble either sickness or stomach pain but do not try to stick it out get in touch with the GI team sooner rather than later if only to put your mind at rest ! Take care Tricia x
Thank you your advice is very helpful yes it’s tough but hopefully things can get better, always seems to be coughing up stuff, is this normal part of the surgery?
