I’m sure this is a fairly common experience but any ideas would be very welcome.
My husband is about four months post Ivor Lewis and generally his recovery has been very good. Eating well but occasionally too much and then hasn’t felt well. He knows when he should have stopped. He has also developed an inguinal hernia which is really causing some problems now but hospital appt 11 September to hopefully, get that sorted out. Back pain which comes and goes depending on what he’s been doing ….. or if the dog pulled too hard.
All was well last night. Had dinner, walked the dog later ….. eventually bed and sleep but he woke at 01.30 with mouth full of saliva and immediate retching twhich continued for most of he rest of the night plus dreadful nausea. Nothing solid was regurgitated. Taken Ondansetron anti sickness meds but He’s still feeling nauseous today and can’t eat.
It seems to have come out of the blue and I’m wondering if due to delayed emptying. He did have a bit much at lunchtime, then small dinner and a couple of chocolate biscuits later however this has not been a problem before. I should add he has not suffered with reflux at all and has not needed a wedge or similar to sleep. We have an oncology appt on 1 September after his recent CT scan.
Any thoughts would be appreciated ….. I worry about anything new or different
Thank you.
Geraldine
Hi Gerry sorry to hear Chris had had this problem so suddenly! Does he take lansoprazole ? Although I rarely suffer with acid reflux only 3 times since my op I take 30mg in the morning and 15mg in the evening and always sleep sat up as I became used to this while I had my feeding tube in, when I have had acid reflux it’s when I have slipped down and turned on my side while asleep after eating slightly later than I should have ! But this sounds more than that as it’s continued all day hope it passes soon
Hi Tricia.
Chris takes pantoprazole which is similar. He’s not had reflux at all since the op and has two pillows but has had no problem lying on his side. He’still feeling pretty sick and miserable this eveni and his stomach hurts all over. We all find it horrible to retch or be sick and I’m sure it must be worse after an oesophagectomy. Hopefully it will pass
Hi Geraldine, my husband is also 4 months post op and doing amazingly well all things considered. A couple of months back he was suffering the same, terrible retching, bringing up vast quantities of mucus, nausea, all of which affected his ability to eat. It transpired that after talking to the upper GI team that he needed to go and have his oesophagus stretched, which he subsequently had to have done for a second time. He is vastly improved now other than still having a bit of excess mucus. He has not had any further nausea or retching. Have a chat with your husbands team, they may be able to help
He’s feeling pretty rough. Chronic constipation now and pain from the groin hernia. Eating makes him feel sick so I think there is a blockage somewhere. I rang 111 at 5 this morning but still no call back from a doctor! We were hoping not to have to spend 6 hours waiting in A and E but it’s that in the morning or trying to wait for GP on Tuesday .
Oh dear can you not contact your GI nurse tomorrow ? I know it’s bank holiday but I’m sure one of them would be on duty to talk to ! X
They would be my go too if I had any problems ! When my feed tube became missed placed I contacted Ruth and she had me straight in. Also Mr Byrne and Titcombe say you know where we are if you have any problems !,
Hi am 12yrs post Ivor Lewis I am very understanding what he’s going through been there done it, firstly eat little and offen every two hours do not drink with your meal before if possible if you eat too much you get dumpling syndrome and your blood pressure will drop you must also drink plenty of fluids to stop constipation. Stop eating by 6-7 pm last drink by 8 pm. At night please prop your self up otherwise it will cause reflux do not sleep on your left as you don’t have a valve there any longer and saliva will come out and you start retching I know been there good luck
Thank you for replying Dods and I’m so pleased you have done so well after your op. Chris is four months post op and has had absolutely no problem with reflux or sleeping etc. He follows those guidelines for eating and drinking. I think he did eat too much on one day which may have kicked off a chain of events making him ill but he is a lot better today. He has developed a pain on the tip of his shoulder bone however but we should have CT scan results on Monday ….. I am very nervous
