Evening All,

So my Dad is 79 and has really struggled with nutrition and been extremely stubborn refusing to consume anything whilst saying he was fine. He was finally admitted to hospital last week due to dehydration as advices by the consultant and they put him on a drip with Potassium as his levels were so low before fitting a stent. He is not himself very confused and agitated which can be challenging and self discharged himself Friday after one final drip late the night before, following dangerously low levels of potassium and magnesium. Frustratingly stent working perfectly but he is still suffering with diarrhoea very badly and still very confused.

He was very ill Saturday and eventually after speaking to the emergency cancer line was ambulanced to hospital as he couldn’t breathe properly and could barely stand up he looked awful. My Dad is totally blind and doesn’t want to be hospital as he feels he will lose his independence. Turns out he contracted Covid on the other ward but is ok. However he is still very confused / agitated and having issues with diarrhoea and therefore low potassium and magnesium levels. Has anyone else had anything similar at all as I don’t seem to be getting any further information from the ward. He keeps saying for me to pick him up as they say he can go home but discharge have said no way he is waiting test results and an OT assessment as he has been falling over.

Just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar, its extremely challenging he wants to go home but he wouldn’t cope right now with the diarrhoea living on his own as he would fall probably.

many thanks

  • I’m sorry things are so difficult for your Dad. It’s awful feeling so helpless and unable to make things better. I can’t comment on the medical issues but just wanted to send positive thoughts and best wishes for some improvement .

  • So sorry to hear - my husband also suffered from diarrhea that also messed up his electrolytes. The consultant said to 'whack him full' of loperamide and said some patients took up to 60 tablets a day. Now my husband is dead, I wish I'd given him more than the 12 - 16 a day as he was weakened by the loose bowels. HTH
