hi. i was diagnosed with t3 in october and have have now completed chemo and proton therapy and had operation in february.  Happily now been told by surgery team I am cancer free. However, now as mop up,  the oncologist has suggested I consider immunotherapy.  Upto 12 sessions once a month. I have been given general details and a sheet that gives all side effects which are numerous and scary. Having put my body through so much and fact I have pre existing  heart failure I do not know what to do. Has anybody had experience of this treatment ? Thanks

  • Hi Toby. I have not had immunotherapy but was offered it. I made a decision against it because of my age and the analysis of the benefits for myself  when taking into account all the sessions required over a 12 month period. I was not at all convinced that for me personally that it was the right thing to do.

The only counsel I can give is that I think it is something you need to discuss in detail with your oncologist as to what are the perceived benefits in your own situation. It is maybe  going to improve your chances against reoccurrence but is the gain worth the pain. That's the decision but the information base seems in my view to be sketchy or at least it appeared that way at the time. Perhaps there is more supportive data now than when I made this decision nearly 2 years back. All the best and glad you are doing so very well so far. I will be interested to see how many people respond to you to say they have taken this on and how it affected them.

  • Thanks for your input. Unfortunately I feel the oncologist was not very helpful as only had a quick 10 minute one to one and was given several sheets which gave information about side effects which were numerous. I know they have a help team there once treatment started but they only work normal working hours and may have to go to a&e outside working hours. I know this is negative feelings. I am only 61 and whilst have been told treatment may avoid cancer returning I do not know the percentages. It is a hard decision but if I want to take option there is a 12 week window after operation, I am now 7 weeks in. Hopefully I have more information on the site.  I know no 2 patients are the same but it would be helpful for any input. Thanks
