Symptoms worry

Hi,

My GP has referred me Endoscopy on Monday and today I received a letter to let me know that I’m on the 2 week pathway and to call tomorrow for my appointment. Now I’m panicking as I know this is the cancer pathway.

I’m 47 and my symptoms began nearly a year ago with the odd struggling to swallow bread and sometimes chicken/meats.  Then in December this became more frequent.  Food takes a while to reach my stomach and can feel like it’s stuck and I need to drink water to help, I’ve stopped panicking as I know it will clear eventually. I try walking about etc to move things along.  I sometimes get hiccups whilst waiting on the food to move and excess saliva.

i haven’t lost any weight at all.  My bowels since late November have changed and I often get diarrhoea.
my doctor prescribed me omeprazole as heart burn is a huge issue too.

my bloods were taken on Monday and I have a bowel screen to do too.

my question is, should I be worried? Or am I getting myself into a pickle over nothing. Is not losing weight a positive thing or have people been diagnosed and had no weight loss?

thank you for your help :)

  • I have not lost weight and am still eating normally but have been diagnosed. Mine was only found when I had an endoscopy and that was due to being low in iron and lie haemoglobin. I have no other symptoms

  • Thank you for replying.  I hope you are keeping well. Hopefully I will get the scope soon and some answers.

  • Thank you for replying. Did your difficulty in swallowing come and go too? But can sometimes eat food normally?

  • I have my appointment for endoscopy for Monday 3rd March.

  • Good luck for Monday ! My symptoms were food sticking then pain in chest and back and then I would bring the food back ! This was the end of last summer I did loose a lot of weight and the fact that you haven’t is a good sign ! But I’m no expert wait and see what the results are from your endoscopy but it’s a worrying time waiting for the results as it seems they take forever ! This is a very supportive forum but I do hope you don’t need to join us take care Tricia x

  • Dear Jackie

two weeks is a long time to wait and your anxiety is understandable. No doubt you are still in shock that you are on the 2 week pathway to diagnosis.

Yes your symptoms are cause for concern otherwise you would not have been referred for endoscopy. And we all wish for you that the concern is unfounded.

Whether or not some symptoms are more significant than others is obviously on your mind.

My perception (from this forum ) is that neither the severity of symptoms nor any specific symptom is more significant in the overall diagnosis of cancer. There are many accounts I have read of others having swallowing difficulties followed by a diagnosis of localised disease and offered curative treatment.

    Best wishes x

  • Hi Jackie

Sorry to hear you’re having these problems. I’d had similar symptoms last year and it culminated in food getting stuck so bad it came back up. Went to the doctors who didn’t put me on the 2 week pathway, eventually referred to a private hospital by the NHS who sent me to the wrong consultant and then didn’t offer me a follow up appointment until around 6-8 weeks later as the consultant I needed to see was on holiday over Christmas.

My parents ended up going into debt to pay £1500 for a private endoscopy which ended up confirming I have OC. Luckily there is no spread and I’m being offered surgery, but had I waited for that appointment from the other hospital things may have been delayed by knock on effect to a point that it had spread.

The fact you’re on the 2 week pathway is a good thing as at least you’ll be seen and assessed in a good time. It also means they’ll be able to tell you it’s not anything to worry about fairly quickly.

Hope all goes well with your procedure and that you get some good news.

    All the best.

    Dean.
