Hello all, I am looking for any information on people diagnosed with oesophageal cancer who have previously had bariatric surgery, specifically gastric bypass. My husband was diagnosed in December last year and we had our first consultant appointment last week. Although the tumour is confined to the oesophagus, no spread, he has been refused surgery due to the gastric bypass and will be treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy only. I understand that it would be more specialised surgery, due to only having a small stomach pouch, but we are very concerned at having surgery ruled out.
I have read that this surgery is possible, but perhaps not everywhere? can anyone share any thoughts please as to where to ask for a second opinion.
Thanks in advance.
Hello, I’m sorry you’re in this position but your husband’s previous surgery does probably mean that operating would be almost impossible. An oesophagectomy removes the oesophagus and the stomach has to be drawn up but I imagine this would not be possible after bariatric surgery.
It would be worth contacting the Oesophageal Patients Association, they might have come across this before and they might be able to help/advise you.
Good luck x
