Cancer in lymph nodes taken during surgery

Hello all

my friend had the oesophagus surgery to remove the cancer and at the same time 40 lymph nodes were taken for analysis. Today he went back to see the consultant who confirmed they had removed all of the cancer and the surgery was successful and the areas around it were cancer free which is amazing.  However 2 of the 40 lymph nodes showed cancer. He was going to have post op flot anyway and they will still go ahead and do this but I wondered if anyone has been in this position? Will this affect recovery? And please be honest. Thank you so much in advance

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me and best of luck on your journey cool blue

  • Hi Bob.

The trial is closed now as it's almost at its conclusion, but it's thought for oesophageal and colon cancer patients that taking a low dose Aspirin after treatment can help prevent reoccurrence. It's currently given as part of ongoing treatment to heart patients (my hubby had a heart attack 10 years ago and takes a 75mg tablet a day for life), but the findings on it for us OC patients make interesting reading. Something to do with making your oesophageal area and colon inhospitable to cancer cells, I believe. I take one 75mg of dispersible Aspirin a day. If the findings are that it helps, which is looking likely, then all OC patients may be offered it one day.

There is some info on the Macmillan site, and other info on Google, but that tends to be very technical to understand.

I'd have taken any trial, to be honest, so grabbed both when I was offered them.

Good luck with any ongoing scans and tests. I know it's always an anxious time, but I'd rather know early of any reocurrence, so am happy for SARONG to monitor me.

  • The two cancerous lymph nodes I had were indeed very local to the tumour. Please reassure your friend it is absolutely still curative. I do know how he feels, the fear is with you 24/7, but with positivity and keeping a close eye on how you're going and feeling, and reporting anything immediately to his team, I'm sure he'll be fine.

I recently had my Omeprazole increased. I happened to say I didn't think it was doing much for me, and when she looked she said "Oh my God, I'm not surprised, you're on the lowest dose we can give, I'll increase it." So from 20mg a day to 40mg twice daily now, and the difference is huge... begone you pesky reflux! What a relief it is! I wish I'd mentioned it sooner!

Also maybe mention the SARONG trial to your friend. Not all hospitals are taking part, but he may be eligible for it, for closer follow-ups. Not everyone likes the idea of regular scan stress and more endoscopies, but for me it gives reassurance. Good luck to you both. You'll get through this, stay positive. xx

  • That's really interesting, although I'm not allowed to take Aspirin as it interacts badly with the meds I take for Atrial Fibrillation

  • I know my parnter is the one goung through it we have a journey ahead only diagnosed 3 days ago hes awaiting a pet scam to see if its spread to his lymth nodes surgey may not be a option
