Surgery - Private v NHS

I'm just about to start FLOT chemo with consideration for surgery.  As this is quite major surgery I am trying to understand the benefits of going privately vs NHS.  Am considering it mainly for the post operative care as I know there is a lengthy stay in hospital and don't relish the thought of being on a noisy ward.  I know food is not going to be a decisive factor as a feeding tube is fitted for a couple of months.  Anyone gone down the private route?  Must say the NHS care I have had so far has been exemplary and so speedy so I have every trust and confidence that surgery and post operative care will be the same.

  • Hi ,I’ve just finished my treatment ie pre opp flot ,surgery, and post opp surgery and to be honest NHS has been wonderful, I was in the Qe birmingham and after 3days in critical care I was transferred to a single room with ensuit then for the last 3days on to a ward of 4 patients  ( total of 13 days in hospital ) as you say foods not really an issue,so I’m not sure if private would offer much more , and in a lot of cases the private hospital’s do not have the back up if there are problems so have to transfer you back to the NHS , anyway best of luck on your journey, and please feel to ask any questions

  • Hi, hope you’re OK.

I was on a hybrid approach for my treatment.

I went via the NHS for my chemo, pre and post op so that I could participate in a clinical trial (trials are only available on NHS and I wanted to throw everything I could at it) which blended chemo and immunotherapy.

My surgery and post op follow ups and monitoring was and is through work Medical Cover privately with the Royal Marsden in Cavendish Square.

Both are fantastic and use the same resources (my MDT, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Surgeon and Oncologist were the same across my NHS and private sessions).

So I don’t think there’s a lot of difference between the two.

I was never given a feeding tube post op and the food I was eating in hospital post op stay would be the same whether I was  NHS or private as I just ate soup, jacket potatoes, yoghurts and lots of ice cream !

One thing I like about the Royal Marsden in Cavendish Square is their same day diagnostic facility so you can get a scan / tests in the morning and then see your surgeon / consultant in the afternoon for the results.

If there’s anything more specific you’d like help with too, give me a shout !
