Morning all, my husband, (diagnosed stage 4 January 22, had 6 x chemo and now on immunotherapy 3 weekly, on his 3rd stent as he swallowed 2!!!!) Has finally agreed to try smoothies due to quite significant weight loss and a lack of appetite, partially due to the pain killers he is on. He's never been keen on smoothies at all so I was wondering if anyone had any recipes I could try. Any help would be gratefully recieved.
I have some ebooks happy to send you if that helps. If you can send me a throwaway email address. A few deal with protein smoothies which help (you can add semi skimmed milk powder which is essentially the same as the expensive protein powders in health shops).
Have found New York times recipes for soups are excellent too - easy Google.
Good luck

What does your husband like, Sweet, Savoury? does he drink milk, cream, or eat ice cream, is ice cream even possible on his treatment ?Does he eat nuts, or have a particular dislike to anything.
Talk me through a few regular drinks or meals and I can see what smoothie ideas come to mind. Feel free to message me.

Hi, sorry to hear about your husband's difficulties with swallowing. I like smoothies. I tend to just make it up as I go. Sometimes I put a block of frozen spinach with banana, frozen berries and I'll supplement with a nut butter and chia seeds. I tend to add water but your can use milk or nut milks but I find these too rich on top of a nut butter. Other supplements I use are ground up flax seeds. I just get this from my local waitrose. Smoothies don't have to be difficult. I just throw fruit and veg into my nutribullet and see if I like it. This is especially true on chemo as my taste has changed. Sometimes I use mash up banana and peanut butter together - it delish. Sometimes I think about my son's weaning recipes I used to make up and make a well blended soup of chicken, appe and potato for example.
I hope this helps. There are lots of recipes online.
Take care
Hi Lowe
Thanks for the reply, he has always hated things like smoothies, I think it partly to do with texture, but has said he will give it another try. The only fruit he used to eat was just ripe pears, so nice and hard, apples and firm bananas occasionally, cherries were always good. He prefers savoury to sweet normally, and yes can drink milk, and eat ice cream. We didn't think with a stent he could eat nuts but happily ate some peanut m and m's last night. he has the prescribed milkshakes from the doctors, 400 calories in a couple of mouthfuls. The problem at the moment is he just doesn't really want to eat, he knows he needs to, but when it comes to sitting at a table and trying something he feels queesy and full after about 6 mouthfuls. My hope is that if I can get some goodies in a palatable smoothie it might give him a bit more energy.
Hi Kitty, yes he's got the 400 calorie milkshakes prescribed, I hadn't thought of just adding stuff to them, thankyou. It's just trying to find something that he will find palatable but has some goodies in as he is loosing weight quite rapidly and has very little energy. Again, thankyou for your reply xx
Thankyou, don't really have a throw away email but will Google your suggestions, cheers. X
Hello Lealan
my husband can’t swallow anything other than liquids he had a peg feeding tube fitted as well. I make all kinds of soups they have to be smooth. Mushroom works really well. He has Aymes shakes on prescription they are complete balanced nutrition come in about 5 flavours. You can add other fruits bananas are good mango etc we also have bought protein shake powder, the kind bodybuilders and runners cyclists use. These come in a massive array of flavours. Another trick is to buy dried milk powder and add it to your regular milk to increase the protein content. I also invested in a powerful blender by Ninja. I wish you the very best.
kind regards
