Persistent cough

My husband has oesophageal cancer. He had an op in 2020 but at the end of 2021 it returned. Sadly I don't think he has a long while left but he has been doing very well, even managing to do lots of work to the outside of the house! However about 4-5 weeks ago he developed a cough. He coughed so often and so hard that he has hurt his back. He has been on morphine from the GP for this. It ran out last week and paracetamol wasn't really helping and he was in pain most of the bank holiday weekend. Luckily he now has some more morphine.

His last scan (about 1-2mths ago) showed his cancer was stable but they don't know what is causing the cough so he has another scan tomorrow.

I am just worried and wonder if this is a sign of an advanced stage of the disease?

I hope he can get past the cough and resulting pain to get back to a good place.

If anyone else has had any experience of this, I would welcome some feedback please.

  • Hello WW2 Girl

I feel that we are in the same position as you & your husband unfortunately.
My husband had ‘the’ op in 2019 but the cancer came back at the beginning of 2021. Since then he has been doing quite well, he’s hasn’t had any further treatment &  the last scan (Feb 2022) showed the cancer was remarkably stable. That was the best news in the circumstances.
However he does have a persistent cough. He has been advised to take cough linctus & to increase his use of Gaviscon after meals in case it is reflux causing the cough. He is currently awaiting an appointment for a Barium Meal to ensure that food etc isn’t getting into his airways & causing irritation.
I know this doesn’t help much but if you get any helpful advice in managing the cough  please let me know.

    sending all good wishes

  • Hi Suzy

Thank you very much for your reply. Firstly, I am very sorry to hear your husband is in a similar position to mine. Secondly it is interesting to hear that he also has a cough. This makes me wonder if it is part and parcel of the illness and something to live with and manage.

He has been in so much pain that I phoned the doctor today and they sent him down to the hospital to check out a few things. He has his CT scan today too and is seeing the oncologist afterwards now. I will let you know if I find anything more out.

    Best wishes

Many thanks for keeping me in the loop.

  • Hi Suzy,

Well I'm very sad to say this week has escalated in a way I didn't expect. It seems the coughing has been caused by the progression of his cancer pushing on his airway and lymph nodes near his lung. He has been in hospital since Monday but coming home today. However now they are offering palliative care and I think this is it. I am so not ready for this. I am only 45 and he is only 54.... we had so many plans for the future. I just can't believe it. Until now I think we thought there was ahope he could carry on for a year or so.

Sorry this isn't better new and wishing you and your husband all the best x
