Hi, looking for advice on my lack of appetite. I had a stent fitted in April which has helped with me being able to eat, but my lack of appetite is causing me to get stressed. My diet consists of fortisip, yoghurt and soup my dietitian is very good but I really am struggling with my eating and am still loosing weight, I am even wondering if I would be better off having a peg tube fitted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Maxine
Hi Max66, without knowing the specific advice re your eating take the following with caution but is worth checking out. My best friend had a stent and we thought that would mean just soup and Ensure drinks but she started off like that then built up as the days and weeks went on. Her diet will never be as full as before but there is enough variety to stop it getting too boring. She usually eats a smooth porridge for breakfast (like Ready Brek), can have scrambled egg, smoothies (some lovely recipes online that help with nutrition and calorie intake plus allow that taste of many things previously enjoyed but now off limits in their usual state), various types of mash (eg potato, root veg etc) with gravy, jacket potato/sweet potato with lots of butter and a little cheese or things like curry sauce on top (doesn’t eat the potato skin), tinned tomatoes (skinless)….She has even moved onto skinless sausages which she has with some mash and gravy and she says it feels like a proper meal. We did look at companies such as Wiltshire Farm Foods who do a range for people with swallowing issues but she didn’t find them appealing (although they try to make them look attractive) and they are pricey so she’s far happier buying ‘normal’ food like above and having something different each day. Hope this helps a little.
Just to add it took a while for her appetite to build so just small portions a few times a day and if you fancy a breakfast item in the evening why not… or mash for breakfast - go for it :) and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. She has days where things she’s been enjoying really seem off putting to her so she’ll leave them for a week or so and her appetite for those usually returns. You’ve been dealt a massive shock and she told me the stent procedure was horrendous so I think it’s natural that it will take a while to get your head and appetite round it all
Thank you soo much for the reply Juniper it is much appreciated.
