My Mom, was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer shortly after her 80th birthday, she had a feeding tube fitted shortly after diagnosis. She completed chemo and radio therapy mid December. So, now, 6 weeks after completion the affects of the treatment have not improved, she is still easily confused (previously before treatment she was very sharp), she is constantly having to spit out saliva and is still very tired with no energy. Can anyone comment on how long recovery from the treatment takes?
Hello Archie
Welcome to the forum, I am sorry to read that your Mum was diagnosed with OC, and after treatment she seems to not have recovered too well.
It is a very tough for anyone to go through both chemo and radiotherapy regardless of their age, but I imagine that it is even harder as we mature in age, often we read that therapies have been denied due to the age of the patient, so it seems only right to imagine that the oncologist believed that Mum would benefit from the treatment.
Have you gone back to the oncologist to ask the questions you have placed here?
Alternatively you could place a message on ASK A NURSE who may be able to offer some advice.
I hope that some others may be able to come along and give some thoughts on managing the saliva.
Wishing your Mum all the best
