Questions on swelling due to feeding tube

Hi, so my husband had a laparoscopy yesterday to check for spread (thankfully none) and have a feeding tube fitted in case he needs it whilst going through chemoradiotherapy. He came round and was doing really well.... but it turns out there is swelling where the feed tube was fitted, which is causing a blockage and making him sick. They have fitted a tube down his nose and throat to drain and hope that it clear itself, otherwise they will have to do more keyhole tomorrow.

Has anyone else had this happen? I'm so worried that by putting the tube down his throat that they could aggravate the cancer and make it worse. To add to this he's been told that someone on the day patients ward he went into to have the laparoscopy tested positive for COVID.

  • Hi  sorry you haven't had a response to your post.

I had breast cancer so not the same but like you I was worried that, in my case the biopsy would cause the cancer to spread.  I think that spread by the tube is probably not likely but speak to your husband's medical team about your concerns.

The point of the chemo I think is that it should eliminate any stray cancer cells no matter where they are in your husband's body and the radiotherapy will do the same but in a more localised area.  So between the two hopefully it shouldn't matter if the tube aggravates anything and causes any spread.

Best thing to do is discuss all this with the doctors.

  • Hi, thank you so much for your message. I agree, I doubt they would have done anything that would be detrimental, but I will speak to his team. At the time of writing the post my mind was overactive as I was worried. He's home now, and looking really well after being looked after so fantastically by everyone in the hospital Slight smile

  • That's good to hear, I'm glad he's home and looking well Grinning
