Colonic Interposition.

Hi,

Following my cancer in 2009 i had the operation to remove a large part of my oesophagus and the top of my stomach. They then pulled my stomach up and joined it to what was left of my oesophagus.  This allowed me to eat and drink again.   In 2013 the cancer returned and luckily they killed it off with chemo and radio.  Unfortunately the treatment had the side effect of completely closing my throat leaving me unable to swallow even my saliva.

I was fitted with a jejunostomy tube into my little bowel to allow me to feed and drink.   Some 8 years later I have been offered the chance of having a Colonic Interposition operation which will allow me to eat and drink normally and do away with the jedge.

I have no knowledge of this procedure, its dangers , outcomes or managing it.   I was hoping that someone who has had this procedure or experience of the procedure would be willing to share their experiences to help me decide as to whether I should accept the offer from the surgeons.

Many thanks

David.

  • Hi David and a very warm welcome to the online community

I don't have any experience with the operation you have been offered but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet.

I typed 'colonic interposition' into the group's search bar and found this previous post on the subject. Although the post is over 4 years old it might help you with your decision.

Let us know what you decide to do

  • Thank you so much for forwarding me the information.    I have learned that it is not a common proceedure so finding someone who has gone through it is not that easy.  My surgeon says that he only does maybe one a year but they were not quite as complicated as in my situation.

My next contact with the surgeon is with a phone consultation on the 14th Dec to advise me, I assume, of the next steps.  I have already had the dietician and physiotherapist contact me with regard to getting my nutrition and fitness levels up to an acceptable level.    Not an easy rask considering the toll that covid lockdown has had on me.

We shall see but thanks for what you did.

  • Hi David

I'm glad you found the information helpful. I thinks it's always useful to be able to read about 'real life' experiences as well as all the 'bumf' they give you in hospital.

All the best on the 14th

  • Hi ya David. i was diagnosed with oesophegal cancer in 2019 and subsequently had 3 lots of chemotherapy followed by 25 doses of radiotherapy followed by an operation the same as yours unfortunately l developed sepsis and ended up on a feeding tube like yourself for two years it was a nightmare not being able to eat. in March 2021 l was offered a colonic interposition and jumped at the chance, l can now eat and drink anything and have my life back. it has not been perfect afterwards i have had abdominal pain and pain across my ribs but none of the other complications that you see listed, l hope this helps if you would like to chat let me know and we will sort something out.

    Regards Ric

  • Hi Ric,   Many thanks for your response. You are the only response I have had so I am most grateful.   I am so pleased that you are doing very well following your proceedure and I would really appreciate a chat with you.  Let me know how you want to proceed. Kind regards   Cavid.

  • Hi ya, been having a helluva game logging into the forum, sent you a message but not sure if it went so thought i would send another one. Hope you are well and not confused by all the information you can find on the net, some of it can be very depressing but remember a lot of the statistics are based on people who were at deaths door at the time of the op so ignore them. i have a family member who had the op 5 years ago he eats like a horse and has just bought himself a huge motorbike.

    Regards

    Ric
