I am 4 weeks away from surgery at Addenbrookes, I am a very apprehensive but know if I am to stand any chance I must see it through.   I have completed 4 sessions of FLOT which the doctor has told me the the tumour has shrunk enough for me to start eating soft foods.    I have been on Liquid feed via a NG tube since diagnosis in early June and can reasonably swallow milk based drinks or cup a soup (Without bits) but trying to eat anything else results in the saliva glands in the throat and oesophagus -producing vast amounts of thick stretchy saliva which stops me eating. (Jelly being one of the worst culprits)    I am hopeful that the surgery will resolve this issue but I would like to know if anyone else had or has this issue and how they are dealing with it.

Hi Buzboombang, I can't offer anything helpful on this other than wishing you the very best of luck with the surgery.

    Creina

  • hello - I just wanted to say my mum had the same thing, had to constantly spit up saliva that was thick and stretchy. All day long. Her doctor prescribed some anti sickness tablets that have helped- will get the name to you tomorrow

Thank you for your reply, it's  good to learn that the condition is known about and not unique to me. Surgeons are to operate in three weeks from now so hopefully the issue will get resolved.

My husband vomits often, not food but the thick saliva you speak of, lots of it and we don’t know the cause, he doesn’t find anti sickness meds work. One thing he can manage and he finds really helpful is rocket lollies, you get 8 in a packet for around £1 so not expensive even eating many a day as he does.

  • Hi, I had problems with swallowing prior to surgery, I didn't have any other treatment. I felt like it was more like mucus than saliva as it was so floppy. I seem to recall on the old Macmillan site someone saying they found drinking small amounts of a fizzy drink helped them. Since I had the surgery 5 years ago I've not been bothered with it. In September I had a chest infection that lasted for about 6 weeks and was bringing up mucus like baby jellyfish lol. Cough medicine wasn't shifting it so I randomly tried an anti histamine pill and the mucus stopped. Kind regards Frank

I shared this with my husband - the anti histamines, he hasn’t vomited anything since. Fantastic, thank you zapperman x

  • That's great news, I'm glad my suggestion has helped. Hopefully you and your husband can enjoy some Christmas dinner. I know I will have to eat small amounts often on Christmas Day but I am determined to enjoy it. Kind regards Frank.
