Hi.

my mum went to the doc about 2 weeks ago as she wasn’t feeling well in general and she was unable to eat and had no appetite, she was sent for a scan and was told by the gp he thinks she has ovarian cancer but she needs to go for a CT scan but the results of that showed it’s actually oesophageal cancer which has spread to the stomach and liver.

I’m absolutely devastated, I can’t get my head around it, I know it happens to people all the time but when it happens to your own mum it’s just so hard to take.

We have to go back in on Wednesday for the prognosis after all the doctors have had a meeting.

Has anyone experienced this or something similar and can give my any positive news at all?

Thanks

  • Hi JordanT1

Sorry to hear about your mum. How did the appointment go today?

My dad was diagnosed in March of this year & what I have learnt in this time is how much things can change. When he was first diagnosed he was told that they were hoping to be able to offer treatment to prolong his time (stage 4 & 10cm tumour) but that it wasn’t curable.

He then had another appointment where this completely changed & they said their aim was cure. Due to his age (66yrs old) they would I throw anything they could at curing him.  He has had 4 rounds of flot chemo which has reduced his tumour - we aren’t sure by how much but we have been told it’s reduced significantly.

He now has Ivor lewis surgery (surgery to remove part of his oesophagus) on Monday - which will then be followed by 4 further rounds of flot chemo around November time.

Whilst there are still lots of unknowns for us & we are praying for successful surgery and we have tried to remain positive throughout.

We were told to ignore the stats you see online -they our outdated & don’t give an accurate picture. I ignore lots what I see online now & look at this group more for real success stories and experiences.

Wishing your mum & you all the best.

    Hi Hope.

That’s great news that your dad seems to be getting better.

I hope the surgery and further chemo goes well.

We had a call from the endoscopy dept this morning saying my mums to go for one on Tuesday.

We still haven’t heard the outcome of the doctors meeting though.

  • Hi Jordan

Thank you, I will be glad when he is back home & recovering well from surgery - just got everything crossed it is successful.

I remember it felt like lots of waiting around at first, and chasing people etc but once you have a plan things should move quickly.

Keep us posted on your mum & reach out any time - in my experience this has been a lovely & supportive group.

  • Hi there, just to let you know I was diagnosed with stage 2 to 3 oesophagus cancer. I started 4 chemo sessions on 31/12/20. On 29th March I went in for osophogectomy. Came out 14 days later. Got the all clear about 6 weeks ago., all cancer gone. Didn't need anymore chemotherapy. I actually start work on Monday 2nd August. I have been really lucky. There's hope for everybody and I wish everybody the best.

Love and respect to everybody involved in the fight against cancer.

    Cheers, Dave.

  • Hi Dave

Thanks for sharing your story - so pleased to hear you have got the all clear and your cancer has gone.

All the best for your return to work too.
