Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced symptoms of nausea and vomiting towards the end of life? Mums been gradually declining for some months, but seems to have taken a turn for the worse today.
She has been vomiting throughout the afternoon. She has had an anti sickness injection which seems to have stopped this and she has settled. She is on ward rounds tomorrow to have her medications switched to injections and/or possibly have her driver set up to keep her comfortable.
Vomiting isn't something which I've seen much of on any symptom timeline, end of life guidance or this thread very much so I was just reaching out to see if anyone had any first hand experience, or if it's just another symptom to add to the list.
Hope you are all well xx
Hello. So sorry to hear about your mum. My late husband did vomit and that’s when he was moved to syringe driver. On March 8th this year he didn’t open his eye at all. My daughter and I still managed to give him some food like porridge, soup etc (which we shouldn’t hv) and he had them without opening his eyes. In the evening suddenly everything came out and it was like the body was rejecting everything and shutting down. Following day he was moved to hospice and he was there for 3.5 days in hospice. Even in hospice there were few times when we saw few bits coming out of his mouth, possibly whatever was left in the body.
Take care and keep the doctors/nurses informed.
sending you lots of hugs, love and positivity.
Thankyou for your reply. I've spoken to the care home today and the sickness has continued. They've administered another antisickness injection and if this doesn't work they will be starting the driver today. They don't seem to know what's causing the sickness but I do feel like this is her body starting to shut down.
Can I ask how long before the hospice your husband started with the vomitting symptoms?
Sending love xx
Just a quick update. The sickness is under control mostly by anti sickness injection. A driver has been set up tonight and has medazolam in, they are administering morphine via injection and will review tomorrow to add it to the driver. It's been a horrible day. Mum was quite agigitated, followed by a long period of general restlessness, picking at her blanket and moving her legs around alot. Back to watching and waiting but I predict a rough few days ahead xx
HI ECA3
sorry to hear that things are taking a downward turn. A lot of what you describe is similar what I experienced with G in those final few days. He was Ok-ish on the Saturday but started being sick on the Sunday morning. He'd had a stroke/seizure overnight and never really regained full consciousness. He had a syringe driver put in on the Sunday and by the time he passed the following Friday there were two in place. He was quite agitated for a couple of days but they added something (midazolam I think) to calm him down. By the end I don't know what all he was receiving but it kept him as pain free as possible and calm.
sending you love and light and hugs and strength

Thankyou for sharing wee me. It seems the vomitting isn't such a common thing, I can't find anything really outside of this group. Mums vomitting has stopped. However I'm not sure if was the anti sickness meds, or the fact it then coincided with a decrease in appetite, then an inability to swallow, followed by the driver.
She's calm and settled again today and seems to be pain free. They said we could go like this for a while now. However surely there's only so much time the body can go on like this. She's been nil by mouth since Friday and the driver has been set up since Friday too. Hard to know what to do for the best as we've been camped out for days, but there's no significant changes now since the driver went in.
It's really hard to wrap my head around the fact she's here today but the end is nearing so this time next week she may not be. It's an odd feeling xx
