Neutrophils

Got a bit of a kick up the ass today. Treatment has been going really well and I'm in the maintenance phase following 6 cycles of chemo. I was due to get another cycle of Obinutuzumab on Wednesday but my bloods just came back and my neutrophils count is 0.3. Minimum for Treatment is 1.0.

Means I have very little resistance to bacterial infection and I've been told to be very careful.

I feel fine and was optimistic going into the treatment this week but this is a reality check.

Anyone else have issues with low neutrophils during treatment?

  • Hi  sorry to hear this and it’s a yes from me, I had various treatments delayed due to low blood counts including low Neutrophils…… it actually happens a lot.

Post my second Allo SCT I had low Neutrophils for about 4 months and even now, 9 years on my Neutrophils can often be at the bottom of the acceptable range.

Lets look for things to improve quickly and your team could give you some G-CSF Injections like FILGRASTIM as this can wake up your bone marrow and get your blood counts back up.

  • Thanks Mike

Sorry to hear you had a similar issue but selfishly glad that I have company in this. I was feeling really optimistic this morning and my confidence just took a major hit.

Am waiting to hear back from the consultant if he wants to try anything or just wait for a week and retest.

I had a suspicion that a tough workout I'd done the previous day may have impacted my results but can't find anything to support this. Either way, will be curtailing the exercise this week in the hope my bloods get all my energy.

  • Just had my bloods back. Neutrophils back up to 3.2 in a week. My team are more surprised than me at the turnaround. I can only assume it was the exercise which hit me. One to bear in mind for the future.....

  • Yes my son did, about a year ago.. They postponed his planned chemo for a week (actually it turned out to be 10 days because no appointment available at 7 days). Subsequent chemos were all fine. They gave him an injection on the first one after the pause to help raise neutrophil count. I don't remember if he had injection for subsequent chemos, but I think not. He had thymoma. He has now finished treatment.

  • Good news and a lesson learned.

    Have a great Christmas

  • And the very same to you my friend

  • Hi Cormac

my neutrophil count has always been below the acceptable levels for more than a year after stem cell transplant.  It just returned to its normal level just a month ago.  I suffered series of infections this year, but GCSF injections helped to boost the immune system back.
Hope your medical team would find a solution to your issue.

  • Yes mine were less than that & I ended up in hospital for a week with neutropenia infection, so be very careful, isolate & keep visitors out of your home until you're counts rise .

Be strict, with viruses, hand washing, what you eat ect...

    Good luck !
